A bunch of old white people see someone with a higher melanin count on TV and suddenly think the sky is falling.

They will most likely be wiped out at the next election.

It's probably the recorded rise in crime and vast numbers of unemployed migrants not refugees.

Not necessarily. A lot of AfD voters are not extremists and would prefer to vote for a moderate party if there was one that paid any attention to them and shared their concerns about immigration without integration and on a scale not otherwise seen other than in full on conquests. For example, the English conquest of most of Britain that led to the creation of England involved a smaller change in population over a far longer period of time. There's good evidence that most AfD voters are essentially opposed to AfD and certainly to the extremist part of it, but regard it as the least bad option available. If she can create another option, those people would vote for her.
