Hey all.

I wonder if anyone has any tips/tricks or methods to be able to get more money for GBP currency? Specifically for USD.

Bank transfers obviously cost their "fees" but in addition to that the conversion rate is mostly poorer than say getting it exchanged at the airport.

what methods can you recommend for essentially getting more USD for GBP?

Release a statement that Obama is dead, dollar plummets, buy, buy, buy, profit etc etc.

Do you need loads of cash?

I personally take a little and then use a credit card which doesn't charge fees for overseas transactions. In a developed country like the US or anywhere in Europe its perfect.

yeh. I mean, I do use AMEX which do charge international fees but that's the same just like most cards you use abroad.

I am looking for cash. Ideally I would like to get a really good rate for doing a bank transfer to a US bank account which I will open soon. But even raw hard cash would be good.

A bit of an odd one but one I have used a few times, on the poker forums people regularly buy and sell currency, normal practice is at xe.com mid rate

yeh, I always use that site (xe.com) to look at the rates. but obviously that sometimes is not the rate you would get at airports or post office.

just wish there was a better rate for USD currency - unfortunately the bloody bankers ruined it a few years ago..

Yawn.

Halifax clarity credit card. Pay off in full.

If you need cash the moneysavingexpert page is good. Usually travelex at the airport, booked online, is best IMO. Convenient.

Exchange £10-£15 in the UK for a bit of spare cash. Buy everything else, and make cash withdrawals from ATM's, using a Halifax Clarity credit card at the best possible consumer exchange rate.

I'm off next month - with just $10 in my wallet. Why carry more?

Prepaid cards, foreign exchange, travel agents, they will all offer you a poorer deal.

Use a credit card that doesn't charge. Get an awesome rate and don't end up with money left over when you come back.

Don't forget if you're in London that a Metro bank account will not charge you for forex. I opened an account and left with my Mastercard debit card, set my PIN and logged into my online banking within 45 minutes. The service was really good.

I know, I really want one but I never seem to be in London long enough to sort it.

You really don't need very long. The service was well beyond anything I've had in a more traditional high street bank.
