Get more for Currency

I generally just take cash though you need to make sure you have a good insurance policy to do it this way

Which is the other hilarious thing about taking piles of cash. Pay more for your money then pay more again for extra insurance incase you lose it all.

Or just.. take a card and visit the ATM in Walmart.

If its a quantity that you'd want to insure then I don't think an ATM would be sufficient...

Anyway OP doesn't seem to be clear about what he actually wants... there are plenty of services out there to do this if he wants to wire the money to a US Bank account.

You don't need enough cash for your entire trip though, you can just pop to the ATM when you need to (or in reality, pay for almost everything on credit card, seriously, I was even buying 79c soda's on credit cards, almost nothing needs cash and for the things that do, just use an ATM).

Completely depends on the situation... your trip isn't the same as one for someone else...

Like Rotty for example - a poker player... he could easily require more cash if playing in a big tournament series.

Would he need to bring that in cash though? I genuinely don't know how you buy in to bring poker tournaments.

He could wire some USD to the main cage too AFAIK... but I don't believe credit card is allowed for casino chip purchases would assume the same would apply to tournament entries ( though I've never played in the likes of the WSOP)... Players will tend to want to play the cash games too at major tournaments - an ATM isn't necessarily going to be sufficient for that - US Bank account or bringing a large quantity of cash would seem to be the two main options.

This is true, but 95% of people who post here asking about currency are going on holiday and therefore have a 'situation' that matches that of the average tourist.

For every 500 people who go to the US I'd imagine perhaps 1 of them is going with $5k hard cash for a poker tournament :p

You cant use the fact a minute number of people might want to play in a high stakes cash poker game to descredit what is otherwise absolutely the right way to go about taking foreign currency on holiday.

How do we know this is just about going on holiday?

You quoted someone who's posted several times on these forums about playing poker and made a remark about using an ATM... I'm just highlighting why that might not be feasible for his situation.

As for the OP/thread in general... who knows... he's not really specified anything though has mentioned a US Bank account

understand but as I say I get cash at the XE mid point, there is no way you can do that with an ATM

the insurance I already have for other reasons

this is where the exhange scene cones from, loads of folks buy $ or Euros for the nig tournaments, the winners then come back with huge amounts and sell it back to the community

thanks all!

sorry for not being clear, I guess I had 2 minds/thoughts going on at the same time.

I am going to look into what has been suggested but here is some clarification:

I want to transfer around 15K USD to a US Bank account either wire transfer OR cash but I want more bang for the pound.

Further more than that, I may transfer a larger amount in the future when I (hopefully) shift to the US. Basically I am looking to get as much dollar as I can.

The GBP:Dollar rate is actually pretty good at the moment*, so not a bad time to transfer that sort of money

* Ok sure it still sucks compared to the mid 2000's but it's better than it has been for most of the year.

Have a look at these guys, the rate seems very good
