get out before i'm 30?

I currently work in the public sector (Town Planner) and have climbed as high as I will go unless someone dies there! I am 26 and recently I been told that if I stay there beyond 29/30 I will end up getting the wrong mind set and won't be able to get into the private sector as I will have been in the public sector to long. So by 30 I could be washed in in that sense?

erm.... what about applying for a job in the private sector? No risk of a lengthy prison sentence if it doesn't go according to plan.

If you are in the public sector, you will enjoy a better rate of pay, better pension and less work than you would in the Private sector, in general anyway. Plus, there are not a lot of jobs going presently. Move to another council perhaps?

If i work public sector all my life I get final salary pension, 40 days leave a year and flexy. I think climbing the public sector is more attractive style of life over a private consultant who works all ours of the day.

I'd stay where you given the current climate. Besides when you apply for any job (in my experience) all employers want experience & don't care where you gained it in the public or private sector.

Maybe, but don't you feel slightly bad knowing that you would be contributing to overinflated government expenditure?

Got to agree with that one - if you got in before the rule changes you can also retire at 60

I have another year to go before my 20 year stint comes around and for that I get the 'well done medal' and an extra 5 days leave for that year

Just because you work for the Government it doesn't mean you have to spend millions for no particular reason like most of them do

, so if I had to answer your question, no, I don't feel bad for working where I do.

I kinda meant my comment in relation to the notion that working in the public sector pays better, you get more holiday, and yet do less work than those in the private sector

I love how we bitch about the public vs private sector pay and conditions, and yet then encourage someone who is in the public sector to exploit the system a bit.

Unfortunately the job security isn't as safe as it used to be - you still have to do something reeeeeeeeally wrong to get sacked, unemployment isn't a problem but the current 'phase' is outsourcing and its been happening for a few years now.

You current job could be outsourced to an IT company and then the job security is in the hands of the gods......if the company you have been outsourced too isn't doing well then its getting onto dodgy grounds.

As many have said though, its a lot safer than 'proper' work
