Well due to recent driver problems, I am not completely sure that Crossfire is providing the experience I would like. Im not an extreme computer user, therefore all I want to do is install a game and play it, without having to rename exe's install software to force profiles etc etc.

At the moment I am gaming at 1920x1080 with crossfire 6970's. I am very tempted to sell up and get this;

Would this be a wise move?

I would support going for a single card, but not spending that much on a single card for playing at 1920x1080.
Get a cheaper 580 or 570 or something.

yepp, i agree, just sell one of your 6970's.... One 6970 is more than enough juice for any game at 1080p...
And you pocket some cash too from the sale of the other card, WIN WIN..

You only really play BF3, right? Should run perfect on just the one 6970. I have it running on a single GTX 570, which is arguably a bit weaker than a single 6970 and can max out everything. On that resolution anything more is overkill, imo, so save yourself the money...

I am Pro multi GPU but the Op is clearly not happy.
I say go for that GPU because the NV 580 is the best Single GPU out atm.

Another question.

Would I experience less problems with SLI or is the support there just as sketchy. I mean if they are better, SLI 560ti's could be an option.

SLI is just as bad as XFire, if you are that unhappy, just sell one of your 6970's and keep the other one, don't bother going nvidia, they are way overpriced for the performance

Well it's up to you but personally why lose all of them frames ?

If you play games around the first month of their release then move on - and lets face it, this could encompass a lot of the sort of people who dump 500 big ones a graphics card - then you are only ever going to see half of 'them frames'.

Try running just one 6970 first and see how it goes. If it turns out you need something better, then hang on for the 7000 series. If that still doesn't tick the box, then hopefully the 580 will have dropped price, even if only by a little. Failing all that and you want to buy now, then yeah, the 580 is the best performing card, so go for that.

I only just recently tried the red side coming from a gtx 295 to a 6990.

On games that xfire is optomised its awesome but on the other hand if its not optomised its like having a £80 card. I thought i would give AMD a try but i never knew the driver situation was this bad. GTX 295 is SLI but it just works with everything no problem even though its very dated tech.

Im returning my 6990 under dsr and getting a 580 cause I've never had problems with NVIDIA drivers and I just want to play without all the hassle.

Would this be a wise move?

Nothing wise about it at all, basically, you sell the 2 6970's and lose anything between £100-£250, buy an overpriced 580 for £540 that's about 10%-15% faster than 1 6970!

Then the overpriced 580 will drop to about £300 when 7 series comes out shortly!

That's a possible loss of ~£450!

Sell 1 6970 and replace the other when next gen cards come out, in the vast majority of games you won't notice the difference anyway!

If you don't want any dual card hassles, don't do it next time whether it's red or green.

The problem is that with almost every new big game that comes out you have to wait for a CAP release to be able to use CF properly.

I didn't get the card thinking I could only use half the power until AMD get around to fixing it every time a game comes out.

I obviously knew nothing about these limitations just expecting it to work but I guess I know now that dual GPU setups are just not for me at the moment.

The best thing you could do is dsr the 6990, the worst thing you could then do is get a 580 so close to new series of cards coming out.

If you really need a new card right now the best 1 to get would be a cheap 560ti about £165 and overclock it.

When the new cards come out sell it on for £120, you will save a fortune!

That would be the sensible thing to do but unfortunately I'm not patient enough to wait for kepler even though it's so close.
