Get Sandy or wait for Ivy?

Sorry to hijack your thread but i didn't think this one question deserved its own.

If you all already had a I7 950 when would you be looking to upgrade it? Ivy or after ivy?

u have same cpu as i do 1090t still exceptionally pretty good cpu , so not point of buying now sandi jsut wait for ivi , i am going to switch to ivy as well.

what exactly is your 1090T holding you back with? don't have any problems playing games with my 1055T cause pretty much everything is graphically bottlenecked rather than limited by the processor...? is it just an upgrade for the sake of it? :confused:

I agree to a point. But with Ivy so close, set that as the date to upgrade and do so.

Ok I can see your point, perhaps I should have added\said, if you have got an half decent rig now that will see you through to the next cpu release (in this case the Ivy’s) wait, then when released buy straight away, don’t dither about thinking the prices may drop in a couple of months because by then you may get to hear about their next release and the waiting game will kick in. Don’t get me wrong we all like the latest stuff at a reasonable price but sometimes life’s too short to keep on waiting.

I am waiting, was going to get a 2500K setup but will save a bit longer and get a ivy rig (3770K) when it gets released.. My i3 540 at 4.2ghz is holding it's own for now..

Decided I didn't want to wait any longer, should be getting 2500k delivered tomorrow (going from Q6600 - but want more RAM etc).

Ivy didn't look as huge improviement and 4 months is a long time in the computer world, plus I got a Gen 3 board so should be able to go Ivy if a deal comes up.

Im getting sandy now with a gen 3 msi board going to overclock to around 4.4ghz on the 2500k

Doubt we'll see much movement on SB prices, unless there's a glut of them. They'll just be EOL'd and then replaced with IB.

I went with a 2500k, great chip, runs super cool even at 4.6Ghz and the power usage is way down on my 920 at 4Ghz. I have a none Gen 3 Z68 board but apparently it will run ivy chips. AFAIK the gen 3 boards will just allow PCI-E 3.0 support with ivy and none gen 3 will just have PCI-E 2.0 support, no big loss.

The most important aspect that Ivy Bridge brings to the table over Sandy Bridge is the PCI-Ex 3 interface.

The main advantage of IB over SB is its 22nm and thus lower power consumption + higher achievable overclocks and about 5 - 10 % improvement clock for clock just due to process shrinking. So you should be able to clock IB higher, have better IPC and still be running cooler than SB. Considering how great chip SB already is IB definitely looks tempting. I've decided that SB was not enough of an improvement for me to justify an upgrade but IB could be. Of course I would like to buy some 22nm hexacore without integrated GPU (and reasonable price) much more than quad but I doubt those will be available anytime soon. Therefore I guess for me the question is more if I should wait for next gen after IB or go with IB.
