Essex, innit?
I was out last night at a networking event. I got home at 1am.

We were woken up at 4:55am by the phone.

We got to the phone but missed the call. but there was a message.

It was what sounded like an elderly woman, heavy breathing. Rasping. She said one word. "Sharon". My girlfriends name.

Obviously quite disturbed by this Sharon did 1471 immediately, got the number and called it back. The same woman answered and, calling Sharon by her name, explained that her mum (Sharon's mum) was seriously ill, was having difficulty breathing and was being rushed to hospital. Sharon asked which hosipital, to which she replied Basildon.

Sharon belted out the house like a mad woman, as you would, in her pyjamas and drove the 10 mins to her mum's house.

Her mum was in. In bed. Asleep. Alive.

Sharon had woken her brother up to let him know while she was on the way to the house. He called the number back. The same woman replied, and denied speaking to Sharon

I am bloody furious. We've since phoned the number back and there is no answer. We've also called the police.

But what I don't get is the fact that we are ex-directory. No one recognises the number. So how did they know that someone called Sharon lived at our telephone number?

I feel sick. I've only had 3 hours sleep and have to go to work now. Glad her mum is OK though.

Is there any way of finding an address from a telephone number?

Being ex directoy means that no one would know "sharon" lived there. Either its amazingly good luck they happened to use the name sharon OR its someone she knows out to annoy... has she has a run in with anyone lately? man or woman?

One way to put her mind at rest would be for her mum to use a password if she ever phones.. something dead easy. That way if this person phones again you can quickly discover the truth and sharon wont be put though any strain as she knows its not her mum in difficulty. Make a note of times of calls and if it happens even once more contact the police and BT. They WILL find out where the call is originating. usually the sort of plebs that do this kind of thing dont even use a phone box, they are too stupid and think that with holding the number is enough.

We're not with BT. Can they still look into it?

The police are on the case. As am I, Sharon's two brothers and our mates.

One possibility is that it is some confused old dear, but then, as I said before, no one has our number. None of her mum's friends

Hi Mate.

Type the phone number into www.samknows.com. It's and adsl broadband checker site, it will give you the exchange from which the number originated. Might help narrow down the potential culprits. Unless it's a mobile number of course.

Good idea but my exchange has 2,000+ lines connected to. This is a rural area as well :)

Lots of doors to knock on :p

Also use the offical BT ADSL checker, as this gives you an idea of the speed available and hence line length. It certainly won't narrow it down to a house or even a street but it may help. I live in a rural area too, using these two wedsites you can determine my exchange and thatI live outside the main village. Hopefully with a bit of extra info (people that don't like you etc) you can at least start to look in the right direction.

If you get nowhere with the police, you could always play them at their own game. Wait maye 2 months. Then phone up, lie about who you are and try and blag their address out of them. Pretend to be a lost delivery man, or something along those line. I suspect this is illegal, but personally I would not let this lie. After exhausting all offical routes, I would take matters into my own hands! Good luck mate,

Even NTL/Telewest?

Nope BT "only" own the lines they put down (still most of them).

If you're NTL/Telewest there is a good chance your phone line will have been laid/owned by them.
