I have 2 PC's that access the Internet via an ADSL router (BE broadband). Both the PC's connect via an ethernet cable. How can I get the PC's to see each other and access each others files and folders?

Firstly, what Operating System are you using? This would help us to guide you through a specific process.
However, to put it all bluntly, you need to turn on "Network Discovery" which will enable any computers on the network to see each other.

If you then go to 'Network and Sharing Center' and click your network you should see any other devices/computers on the network, assuming you don't have a firewall which blocks them.

Then, you will need to enable file and printer sharing, with or without password, public folder sharing and/or media sharing.

It's all done within 'Network and Sharing Center'...

Sorry my bad. One PC is windows XP and the other is windows 7. Thanks for your reply.

I am mainly needing the XP PC to be able to access the 7 PC.

okay... I'll try and put this as best as I can, so sorry if I miss things.

For your Windows 7 machine:

Network and Sharing Center > Advanced Sharing Settings:
Under Home or Work, Turn on Network Discovery.
Turn on File and Printer Sharing
Turn on Public Folder Sharing so any one with network access can read and write files in the Public Folders.

It's upto you if you want password protected sharing ON or NOT.
Make sure your network is set to a Home Network and not Public or Similar.

For your Windows XP Machine:

Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections.
Right click Local Area Connection > Properties, then tick File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.

You will now need to set both computers to be on the same workgroup, for both of them it's right click My Computer > System Properties > Remote Settings > Computer Name > Change Workgroup.

Make sure it's the same on both machines. Then assuming your firewalls aren't blocking any incoming or outgoing connections, you should see the name of your XP machine when you click your network icon in 'Network and Sharing Center'

That's as far as I can help you with the information you provided. I haven't used XP for about 3years so there may be some additional settings.

Hope it works out for you okay, Emphacy.
