Getting a 360, need advice.

Get standard rechargeables rather than the play and charge. They are cheaper, last longer and can be used for other things. Since they come in packs of 4 you never need to worry about the batteries dying mid game and then not being able to continue.

I got mine for £10 from a very well known 4 letter game shop :).
Forget what I said then, get that!

What about audio, will i be able to use my PC speakers with this? (They dont have a volume control on the speakers, could be a problem.)

What output/input do you're speakers have?

Right so shopping list :)

Xbox+Gears Bundle
Forza 2
Dead Rising
VGA cable
Plug and play kit.

Thanks guys, this will be my first play on a xbox360 and ive been a hardcore PC user for ages. I'm going to the dark side :)

EDIT: Oh i have just two speakers that share the same input jack, the standard little green one. I also have a hi fi system with two whacking great speakers my dad built ages ago but i dont really know much about hooking the hi fi up to my xbox...

I'm talking about the VGA cable, not a scart cable.

My £5 unofficial VGA cable from an auction site is just as good as the Official one. The video quality is identical and I've not suffered with any lack of shielding problems that some people report with 3rd party cables. It didn't come with a 3.5mm to phono adapter like the official one does but I picked one of those up in town for a fiver.

I sold my official one in the MM in the end. If it hadn't of come in crappy blister packaging then it would have gone back for a refund instead!

Ok got my XBOX, and i definitely need a vga cable :S the subtitles in dead rising are so small, and the biggest tv in my house is 27inch, hopefully it will be more clear on my aging 19" CRT. A quick one, is the microsoft VGA cable male or female, does it come with an adapter?

Don't listen to all the hype, mine was fine on my old TV, I had both the MS and unoffical one and couldn't tell any difference so I sold the MS one for £££.

Really not sure about that - If you HAVE to buy one official thing, make sure it's the VGA cable :)

I suggest to anyone buying a 360 to buy from a shop and not online. There's a reasonable chance it'll break down and it's so much easier and hassle free to just walk in with your busted machine and walk out with a new one (remeber to keep the HD). I also suggest getting some cheap cover if possible (Currys do a good one)

Don't let this put you off, though. We have to goes where the good games are, and that means owning a 360 :)

Ye i bought from a shop, 280 for premium plus forza 2 and dead rising, then i got GOW, Overlord (for the missus) and a play + charge kit, then got 10% off everything because my student card is still valid, so all that came to £340 in *somewhere else* not bad eh? (I'm going to try LIVE tonight! on my monitor yay HD + Online! Seriously, 360 games like dead rising and GOW are impossible to play using a low def TV, although Forza was better. Ooooo! cant wait to get off work! My GF just picked me up the official microsoft VGA Cable, hopefully it will work with my monitor (which hasnt got a VGA in, but a VGA out cable). Then ill plug my phono leads into my Amp and 4 foot high Kef speakers, and knuckle down and play like ive never played before!

crazy mofo you might wanna edit out that shop where you bought it for.

The VGA cable comes with a female adapter changer thing so that shouldnt be a problem.

Is there anyway to connect to xbox live using my USB modem, because when i plug it into the USB slot on the back of my 360 it wont detect it. or will I have to get a router?

you can use a router or you can plug the ethernet lead from a 360 into your pc that is attached to a modem and share the connection via ICS.

My PC is out of action at the moment. So do you suggest I get a router? I havent had one before, do they need to be plugged into the PC? Shall I get a wireless one? and finally, how much will this cost? Thanks for the speedy reply.

no you dont need a pc, they are plugged into a phone socket, then youn plug your ethernet lead from your 360 into the router. Get wireless if you want wireless. Price ranges from about 20 to 100-ish, its worth getting a good one though. First one i got was £19.99 and it was rubbish, i now have a Netgear that cost me £55 and its superb.
