i have got a dentist appointment this afternoon for a filling, itll be the first thing ive ever had done to my teeth and im 19 i was just wondering does a filling hurt or not? the temporary one was fine and there was no pain atall, was just wondering what to expect...

Imagine one of those pneumatic drills that they use to rip up pavement and tarmac.

There will be a "bonzai" version of one of those.. followed by a set of mimi secateurs and then a mini pipe filled with hot alloy which will be directed over the hole in your tooth.

This may or may not be true... I'm 26 with no fillings! :)

Lol na mate I've had two fillings, I was crapping myself but if I was told I had to have another now I wouldn't be too worried, it's really a painless process, it's unpleasent of course but no real pain. Your whole mouth will be numbed but strangely you can actually feel the drill on your tooth which isn't a nice sensation but no actual pain.

Nah, it doesn't hurt. I don't usually get an injection because me and needles don't mix well but I hate the numb face all day. Just grip onto something and let 'em drill :D

But then they hit nerves if your with the NHS...then it hurts a bit :p

Id take the needle anyday, I think toothache or any pain in your teeth (particularly some fella hacking at one with a rusty drill) is some of the worst pain out there!

Heheheh, this just sprang to mind:

it is a very uncomfortable experience but not painful
That about covers it.

With a good dentist, the injection hurts more than the filling, and that isn't exactly painful. Oh, and your mouth may ache a bit afterwards. But modern anaesthetics are very good indeed, and it's by no means anything to worry about.

Watch the Marathon Man before you go, that will settle your nerves

I had a filling done on Friday just gone actually he gave me the option not to have the injection. So I didn't and it was far less bother.

The injection wont even hurt if they use the numbing cream first.
If they dont use numbing cream the injection will make you cry

A properly administered injection is no worse than a pin *****. As soon as the needle goes in, they inject a little anaesthetic. That numbs the area for the rest of the injection. This process is a little slower than just shoving in right in, so it may take, oh, 10 seconds (even if it feels like it's a week).

If the injection really hurts, either you're a wuss, or you need a new dentist. :D

Numbing cream? Pah. It's for wimps. I'm a real man. I can stand the pinprick without too many tears. :D
