well im getting a new bike this week and so far i only have the bike lock. Wanted to know if there is anything else I need? (helmet, special type of shoes, clothing,)

Set of lights for the winter months/pump/spare inner tube?

Depends what you are using your bike from. You dont need special shoes if you have normal pedals and arent going to be riding seriously, which by the sounds of it you arent.

You wont need any specials clothes, any shorts and t shirt will do.

Helmet is a good recommendation though, go into a bike shop and try them on to see which you find most comfortable, rather than buying online.

cheers mate, i was thinking of replacing my car with a bike for the summer keep fit and save money on petrol. a mate of mine says he finds it much easier and quicker getting around london on his bike. thought I might give it a go

can imagine it would be a lot easier riding around london, if riding to work and back might wanna get a panniers rather than having everything on your back. but be safe out there can be dangerous especially in london.

Yeah cycling in the city is pretty serious, you need to have your wits about you at all times. Nearly got hit by a bus the other day..

The fumes from cars will play havoc with your lungs! Get an Anti pollution mask or face coughing up black flem, then blood, then dieing a slow and painfull death...maybe.

Get some decent chain lube, WD40 isn't all that great.
A saddle bag is perfect for storing puncture repair tools.

For general bike maintenance things like: degreaser, car shampoo, spoke key, lockring tool, chain cleaner, chain tool are all handy.

What chain lube would you recommend? WD40 is a nono right?

only had my bike a few months and wandered around a few mtb forums and this is the stuff i'm using to keep my bike healthy, hopefully no big mistakes here?

chain.
Finish Line teflon dry lube, for dry days.
Finish Line Cross Country wet lube, for wet days.

front and rear mechs.
GT85. (don't get this stuff on the brake discs)

cables, seat post and bolt threads.
Finish Line Teflon Grease.
Rock N Roll Super Coat Grease. really thick blue/black smelly goo, works good though!

fork stanctions.
whatever the manual recommends, usually whats already inside the forks so if you've got Rockshox forks you use Rockshox suspension oil.

cleaning.
bucket, water, sponge, towel.
for tough bits,
Muc Off bike cleaner.
Finish Line Eco Degreaser.
don't get cleaners/degreasers near any bearings!
