I have my 6-monthly review coming up very soon, and I want to ask for a payrise. I've never done it before, but the company I work for is synonymous with not giving them - if they can get away with paying less, they will. There's a few reasons behind me wanting one:

  • I've been kicking ass since I got here - working really hard, all work done on time or before, going above and beyond
  • By the local average, I'm getting paid between 5 and 9k less than someone with my experience and skills (this is based on job adverts, if someone can link to that checker thing, I'd be grateful)
  • I know that the finders' fee for my position was more than the amount I would be asking
  • I was talking to my manager about doing some freelance one week, and she got really panicky, saying that she hoped I wasn't leaving
  • I know the systems and projects that are going on
  • They were hiring for 6 months before I filled the position

Based on those things, obviously most are just my opinion, would people say that I'm justified in asking for a raise? It's not the be all and end all, I can afford to live without it but I don't want to!! I'm hoping that it won't come to it, but if I end up asking for a raise and I don't get it, I'll start looking for a new job! Just wanted some advice because it's a pain in the ass looking for and getting a new job, and I'd really rather stay here with a raise than go elsewhere for one!

Yeah, but I don't know how to ask. It's a bit of an alien thing to me because I've not done it before. I'm assuming I don't just go in and go "I think I'm worth this much more - can I have a payrise?" Doesn't seem very negotiating-y

Take evidence to your performance review. Being able to say "I have done the following" is nowhere near as likely to achieve you something as "I have done the following, here is the verification, this is the benefits it made for the company"

Sell your achievements and demonstrate why you deserve the extra, and you'll stand a good chance, assuming of course that the budget is there for it.

Also add that you are willing to accept more responsibility for the pay rise. Even if it is nominal, it may help your manager 'sell' the idea to whoever holds the purse strings

Oh, and best of british luck to you :)

Cool, thanks guys. Seems like I might be writing some speech-y bullet points in the near future :D

Just ask mate, they can only say yes or no and like you said, if they say no you can afford to live without it.

But if you go in with proof of your performance, and can sell yourself they I don't see why they shouldn't give you a rise.

Of course, if they read these forums they may question your commitment :p

they won't know who I am in real life. Though all it would take is clicking my signature links to find out. In fact, most people here would just have to read my signature :/
