Getting A Rator, Would I Notice A Difference?

Am thinking about getting a , Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB, i currently have a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA-II 16MB. What sort of performance increase would i see, would vista, apps and games load much quicker, or isnt it worth splashin out £200?. The raptor woudl have vista, apps and games, and just keep my old 500gb for downloads and stuff.

It would be noticeably faster but not enough to justify the large price. IMO.

Agreed...you would notice the system being more 'responsive' and 'snappier'
But, its a heavy price to pay costwise......having said that, I have one and love it

The WD Black series are supposed to be good too....i've just ordered the 1TB version for backups and storage.

How about getting a 74gb VR for most used apps and things and any overspill on the 500gb?

The new raptors are considerably faster than the old ones in both random access and sustained read / write speeds.

you'll Notice it for about a week max after that you'll just get use to it.

I'm using the 150G version for OS and Apps and have noticed it being a bit more snappier compared to my WD AKKS640 which I now use for games. Just waiting for the 120G SSD to come down in price, now that will make your OS really snappy.

very snappy system and when all boot files defraged really notice the difference in start up times too!

Yes...and they are much quieter than the old Raptors too.

But would my Western Digital Caviar Blue be quieter than a Raptor or the same?, as i got a 250GB Spinpoint the other month, and it is so much more louder than my WD, even when its not being used! Its easily the loudest thing in my system now, so it has to go really, i dont want the same noise issue with a raptor if i get one?

If the Blue is the same as the AAKS models, then yes, they are quieter on seek.

I would say go for a 150gb velociraptor.. 74gb (used to have a normal 74gb raptor) is slightly too small and as for sound i can't hear mine in the slightest.

Then try going back to 7200K.

74GB and 150GB VelicoRaptor are both Single Platter.

Single Platter should be quieter/Cooler and produce less Harmonics (Vibration).

I doubt you will notice it as the new VelicoRaptors are well engineered.

Is there different models of the 300GB raptor? As im looking on a well know auction site and there cheaper than on overclockers site, so just woundering if there was an older model batch of the raptors?
