Hi,

I have a friend at work who is trying to get a record deal or at least get noticed by the right people. She has already been part of a group back in 1999 called Word on the Street (There still on the web), unfortunately for her the producers and recording company did not really promote them enough and it all fell through in 2 years. Atm She has got 12 songs in her new album and has all the necessary voice and looks i think to make it as solo artist. She has done open mic nights and other small venues but as yet there has not been any interest to get her to the next level

Does anyone here have any advice or contacts within the music business ?

Gordy - I remember was in the music business could you offer any advice/help please ?

Thanks

Does she have a myspace page or somewhere where I can listen to any of her tracks? :)

Does she play many gigs?

Does not have a website or myspace page yet although pictures and a few sample songs of her with Word on the street are listed on yahoo music group. She has not done many gigs but has done a few open mic nights in london and performed at the cafe de paris in piccadilly. Its really now a matter of getting a music producer for one of the may labels to listen to her demo tracks, but better still to come and see her live at one of the open mic nights and go from there...

regardless of previous experience(at that low level), you cant just expect to go straight from playing open mic nights to getting producers to listen to her, you're counting on having massive amounts of luck there

you need to get stuff together, it sounds as though the demo tracks are very rough (might not be just how i read what you posted) if this is the case then get them re-recorded if she can afford to, it wont cost much and will help massively, get a lot of copies made, build up a press pack with a bit of information about her, what she's been doing, what she's done in the past, and send it to anyone who might be useful, try and get as many names as you can
i'd say some level of online presence will be particularly useful, myspace works very well as a platform for getting your music out there, it just gives that chance for people to go and look her up after an open mic night or similar without only finding ancient stuff from something she used to do

As already said, she should get on summat like myspace, as it provides a platform that anyone who's interested in her can have a look.

If she has a good demo, then get as many copies as you can and just send them to as many record companies as you can find addresses for! :)

It is *very* unlikely that she is going to get spotted by an A&R guy at an open mic night and given a record deal. Shameless self-promotion is the way forward!!! :D

its so difficult she needs to build up a fan base, she definately needs a site for starters. and a lot more contacts, its who you know :)

Ill second that. Its all about having support and a fanbase. Then working from there. I would also suggest myspace or a site where her tracks can be listened to.

Like the others have said, she should get a myspace site with a couple of tracks up, and also get out there gigging! It really is a damn good laugh and the best way to get people into your stuff, plus the more gigging you do, the better musician you become!
