Getting a second-hand game to work..

if they hadn't sold second hand then you're left with less people buying so say 9000 is the highest ever, and (one bit you keep missing) then less people continuing to play. when those that would normally sell second hand stop you're left with in this example 4000 less players, so now you have 5000 left, where as with second hand players you have 10000 still as those 4000 unused copies are still being played, therefore second hand sales will only increase the amount of players the continue to play. it's simple. the numbers may be smaller but it's so obvious that second hand sales will only result in more players over the life time of the game, not less.

edit: and one thing i complete forgot which the op pointed out, when you have less players that continue to play a game online you will sturggle to get new sales, so with second hand gamers keeping the number of players at 10k you'll get even more sales of new copies. i wouldn't suggest to someone to buy an online game that has few players

/sigh.

I'll try and put it simple for you.

You start with 9000 players. 3000 sell 2nd hand. Still keeps the numbers level at 9000. No increase, because there hasn't been more sales. Just pass downs to others on a 1:1 ratio!

If there were no 2nd hand market. Fair enough the game could possibly die unless there were more sales. Which we are not talking about.

yes we are... we are saying with second hand sales there will be more players that continue to play it. you then said that's tosh.

c) having a flourishing second-hand market keeps numbers online up, making a better multiplayer experience. Get rid of second-hand buyers-->fewer people online-->fewer people stay online-->online gets rubbish-->no-one buys it new either

to put it the most simplest way i can think of. right now there is x amount of players playing mw2. if miniyazz could buy this game second hand and install it there will be x+1. x+1 is so clearly a larger number then x! this is very simple.

It's simples. With no second-hand sales, there will be a decrease in number of sales from those who would have bought it if second-hand sales were possible, and an increase in sales from those who would have bought it second-hand if possible but were forced to buy new instead. Personally I think the number of lost sales would outweigh the number of gained sales, but it's just speculation, there's no way to prove it either way.

And undoubtedly, the number of players online would be higher where second-hand sales were possible - because the proportion of those playing online vs just owning the game will be higher.

It's just a distinction that needs drawing between sales and online players :)

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

3.1 million steam accounts have logged in within the last 24 hours, 73k of which have played Modern Warfare 2.

Now, 73,000 people playing a game... that doesn't sound like like its that dead, quite the reverse in fact?

Firstly, that statement was hyperbole, I clarified earlier.

But statistics are meaningless without comparison. 73,000 people playing MW2 is irrelevant if 7,300,000 have played it on consoles in the last 24 hrs and, quite frankly, would signify PC gaming as dying if not altogether dead.

Quite frankly modern PC gamers need to do their homework as the 2nd hand market for games died about 7-8 years ago.

Its safe to assume that 99.9% of modern PC games are not resellable & TBH if your the sort of PC gamer who does not mind spending money on hardware but balks at the cost of PC games you have to ask yourself why bother when they are consistently cheaper online via etailors than console games...............

MW2 I bought for only £28 brand new its now £20 if you look around as CODBO is obviously pulling the price down.

Am I right in thinking that the way round this is to just create a new separate steam account for each game you buy with the intention of possibily selling it later on? Then just pass the details of that one game account on?

I don't think it is that much more - there were only around 100,000 concurrent users playing MW2 on Xbox six months ago when I last checked. That number would have decreased by now.

How about, don't try to 'get around it', just follow Steam's rules? Of course if you don't LIKE Steam's rules, that's fine, don't use Steam including any games which require it.

I assume that means 73,000 people playing at one time does it? Rather than 73,000 total out of 3.1 million that day. Maybe 500,000 people played MW2 but only 73,000 at once? Dunno. 73,000 worldwide for a million+ selling game seems low otherwise.

73,111 unique users have played MW2 simultaneously within the last 24 hours - that's the peak. It doesn't give total users played over 24 hours.

Yes re the OP's issue, I would speak to an MM mod about it. And in future do a bit of research to avoid getting scammed in this way again.

beaten by both the 10 year old CS, and the 6 year old CS:s.

I't going to drop very rapidly and never recover in the coming week too.

It's not really a scam when he's already been offered a refund and all costs involved in sending it back is it?

It was a mistake that has been adequately rectified.
