Hey,

Ive managed to perswade 3 into cancelling my contract 7 months early and letting me upgrade my phone for free as my old one broke, so im getting an Xperia X10 deliverd tomorrow morning, i had the choice of a few high spec phones inc. Blackberry 9700, Nokia X6 and E72, Samsung Galaxy Portal and any of the X10 Series.

the main reason i went for the x10 is i wanted a HTC Desire, but he couldnt get one due to the popularity of them.

its due to be delieverd thursday after some confusion over delivery adress but im wondering if its worth using or putting on the bay to fund a HTC Desire. ive looked at the specs and the main difference is RAM.

so then would i greatly benefit from selling it and getting a HTC desire instead?

ive read a few reviews but most seem to be when the X10 was on 1.6 and HTC on 2.1 and with the AMOLED screen

Benefits of both phones i can see are:

HTC Desire.
Better Support?
More RAM
Sense UI (never used it but highly regarded as the best)

X10
Great Camera
Bigger Screen
Very Pretty (but it will be covered in a case - ive never had such an expensive phone)

Any advice is great

cheers

Most people consider the HTC Desire to be the better phone.

If that is the phone you wanted to begin with, and you can get for very little money, then that is what you should do.

The Sense UI is the best Android interface out there, and the camera on the Desire is very good (marginally worse than the X10 one in my experience), and it now supports 720p HD video recording.

These threads are starting to take over this sub forum lol. I don't think the RAM is such an issue (384mb vs 512mb right?). If you want multi-touch and Android 2.2 (Froyo), I would go with the desire. If you want a better camera and more aesthetically pleasing phone, go with the X10.

I think the Desire has stopped shipping with AMODED screens for a short period. They are both great phones but the Desire seems to be more popular. I love my X10 (even though the Desire is probably suited more to my needs) but it does have a few (minor) flaws, all of which will be fixed through software updates. If the X10 had shipped with 2.1 and fixed autolock/low call volume, it would have being nearly perfect.

Your best bet it to get a play with both in a shop and see what you think.

Cue the usual suspects arguing which is better.....:p

Personally I think the desire is much better in terms of looks, hardware specs, support etc. but every one has different tastes in the aesthetics of things.

But don't just get an HTC mobile for the sense UI as you will probably root and flash loads of other better ROMs on and you will probably end up putting launcher pro plus on as well, which is much quicker, way more customizable etc.

Plus some people really don't like the sense UI either, they would rather have just stock android, personally I am not too bothered about that (my i5700 just has stock android, samsung did nothing to it at all in terms of there own UI apart from the home launcher but I am using launcher pro plus now as it's away better).

You really just need to have a go yourself and see which one you prefer.

.... and it now supports 720p HD video recording.

Are those people not getting really sluggish FPS though, like 10-13 FPS or something like that. Just remember all the the people in the froyo for the desire thread complaining about that and plus other things like GPS not working etc.

However those problems could all be fixed easily by HTC releasing another update especially the 720P video recording as the desire is more than capable of handling that.

Keep the X10 and give it a go - it's a good phone, and IMO the Sony Ericsson UI is just a smidgen nicer than HTC Sense, although Android 1.6 is failwhale :(

is there anyway to get a sense rom on the X10? that would make a good combo. However the lack of multi-touch is a major downside IMO.

unpack it
update it (OTA or seus)
hold press the big timescape widget and drag it into the bin
try it and see what you think

in that order

Prices of the X10 are dropping like stone I know someone that picked one up brand new and sealed for £200, the chap i sold my Desire too bought it second hand and 4 months old for £300 and sold his brand new boxed and sealed X10 for £250 this over a month ago.

But don't' get dragged in by the Desires 720p it is terrible who knows how good the X10 will be at doing 720p.

I have just bought an X10 for £205 BNIB unlocked.
I chose it over the Desire for the camera mainly, but the swaying factor for me was knowing that 2.1 is coming to the phone very soon. It should address most issues that other long term users seem to have, so that's good enough for me.

im not after any phone just for the 720p, the camera on the X10 is a big plus and im mainly after the phone as a web browser, twitter client, sat nat and playing a few games to pass time at work* (should have maybe put what i wanted from a phone in the OP)

the more ive looked into it the more im tempted to keep the X10, especially if 2.1 does as much as people are hoping it to do.

main things im looking at to download are the emulators and Zenonia (and as many free good apps as possible)

i dont know much about rooting yet other then it gives you more control over the phone

*i understand playing games at work may be a bad thing to most but my job really does allow it, although the manager frowns upon me playing on my psp its fine with playing on your phone (i think its incase a client comes in) so psx4driod + FF series should give me plenty to do.

cheers so far guys

RAM is probably not going to be an issue I boot 2.2 Froyo on my original Xperia X1 (256MB) sitting ontop of the Windows Mobile 6.1 install and never run out of RAM.

i think im going to keep the X10 now, my only concern now is the lack of multitouch as i want it for gaming but im sure it will fine once im used to it.

ill maybe give it a week and if im still not happy go into a 3 store and maybe try talk them into a change.

edit: oh and cheers "andy", ive looked at some vids and timescape looks like somthing that would annoy me a lot, i use twitter but i dont have the need to know what someone says every min.

cheers for the input guys
