Are you a member of the airline's frequent flyer scheme? Find that helps a lot as upgrades will usually go to higher ranked members of that.

Having 'Dr' or, even better, 'Professor' on your passport helps. A lot.
Would you mind read people instead?
I'm flying to New Zealand tomorrow via Hong Kong and I just wondered how easy it was to get a free upgrade on the flight when someone in first class doesn't turn up etc.
I think upgrades tend to happen when cattle class is filled up, rather than there being free seats in business/first class.
When you lot say smart will smart casual do or are you talking shirt , pants and shoes ?
I'm flying to NZ next January and fancy trying for an upgrade too![]()
I've never ever flown medium/long haul and not had an upgrade of some kind, even it it's just from 'economy' to 'economy plus'.
I remember smiling and being a gent at the check in desk.
Dress smartly, engage the check-in person in a bit of conversation and then just ask very politely if there's any chance of an upgrade.
Never ever? How many times have you flown medium/long haul? I have friends who work for airlines who haven't even been able to be upgraded a lot of times.
How do you engage them?
Probably not a lot compared to others in here, 25-30 flights I suppose, I've never actually counted them.
Well it turns out that i've been upgraded to business class on the Hong Kong to New Zealand leg now so now it's just winging an upgrade on the flight from London to Hong Kong![]()
Did you do that over the phone?
