Getting an upgrade on a flight

Having 'Dr' or, even better, 'Professor' on your passport helps. A lot.

do passports even have titles on them?

anyway, unless you're flying business class, there is no chance of getting upgraded to first.

getting upgraded to is usually only available if you are on a full fare ticket, and you have the highest membership level on the airline's membership program

what you are wearing makes no difference, it's about how much money you have spent with the airline.

Would you mind read people instead?

?

If you ask for me, you are being cheeky, and just booking cheap flights hoping for a upgrade every time.

Were I would look for someone more deserving. But that's just me.

When it has happened to me, i just got asked and I said yes.
Nice and simple.

I'm flying to New Zealand tomorrow via Hong Kong and I just wondered how easy it was to get a free upgrade on the flight when someone in first class doesn't turn up etc.

I think upgrades tend to happen when cattle class is filled up, rather than there being free seats in business/first class.

When you lot say smart will smart casual do or are you talking shirt , pants and shoes ?

I'm flying to NZ next January and fancy trying for an upgrade too :)

For Christ's sake man, show some decency! A gent always wears pants!

On a more post-related topic, me and the wife and daughter are emigrating to NZ at the end of July but we've prebooked good seats so little chance of an upgrade.

I've never ever flown medium/long haul and not had an upgrade of some kind, even it it's just from 'economy' to 'economy plus'.

Dress smartly, engage the check-in person in a bit of conversation and then just ask very politely if there's any chance of an upgrade.

It's always worked for me.

If the flight is booked out, there is a chance of an upgrade, but it will go business to first. economy to business. It doesn't matter if you come early or late, if its overbooked. It could be said if you turn up later than others and economy gets filled up, you look smart, every chance you will be bumped to the next class.
I have only every had 1 upgrade it was on BA, I was booked in economy and asked the checkin girl who said no can do, at boarding, clerk said you have been upgraded, I was sailvating at the prospect of enjoying first / business. On boarding and looking at the seat I had gone from world traveller to world traveller plus - basically extra leg room only, everything else as economy:D:D

Never ever? How many times have you flown medium/long haul? I have friends who work for airlines who haven't even been able to be upgraded a lot of times.

I got upgraded on a flight to the Dominican Republic and was wearing t-shirt & tracksuit bottoms as they were comfy for the flight.

I remember smiling and being a gent at the check in desk. Not sure if it was that was the reason. Oh and I was on my own.

How do you engage them? Anything that I'd think of saying like asking if it's a busy day or whatever is pretty obvious and never seemed worth mentioning to me and would probabaly annoy them if they have 200-300 people to check in all asking how their day was :p

Probably not a lot compared to others in here, 25-30 flights I suppose, I've never actually counted them.

How do you engage them?

I don't have a script! It's just general polite chatter.

The first time I flew to the USA I blagged the jump seat in the flightdeck for the landings both at Dulles and Heathrow, that was good. There's no chance of doing that these days though.

Dressing smart is the key when getting upgrades from India.. I remember being at the BA desk and slightly flirting with the check in staff. I by-passed the "economy" que and went to the club world check in, I said to her how I couldn't get a business class return (I had flown business on the Inbound), she said "ah lucky for you we have a seat free in business!" I pulled out my credit card as a good will gesture, she said "no don't worry" ahhh 10hrs of pure joy..

Well it turns out that i've been upgraded to business class on the Hong Kong to New Zealand leg now so now it's just winging an upgrade on the flight from London to Hong Kong :P

How on earth did you do that?

I fly long haul a lot (usually on expensive fares), and only once got club world with BA because cattle class was overbooked...

Did you do that over the phone?

My dad did it for me as he booked the flight for me - he had some airmiles to use or something, I didn't really understand to be honest. Though there's a chance that it is indeed too short notice to change that so might just do it on the way back from NZ in August. I'll find out in the morning if i've been upgraded.
