Getting Asus RT-N66U working with Openreach Modem

I was wondering if anybody can give me some advice as everybody seems to have their own ways of doing this.

I am currently with sky fibre broadband, and it is hooked up with the openreach modem then a sky stock router attached to that for wifi.

I am wanting to change the sky stock router to the RT-N66U and I am slightly confused. I don't want this router to work as the modem, as a lot of people seem to make it do. I just want the router to be attached to the modem for better wifi signals/speeds as I have no way of connecting with cables.

If I have my sky username/password needed to set up a new router, will I be able to plug this into the modem and get it working without a firmware update? I understand there are a few settings that need to be tweaked but I also see everybody fighting over which firmware is needed/the best. I just want to know if this router was capable of working with the firmware it comes with or if flashing it is mandatory to get it working with the openreach modem. Also will there be any downsides such as speed loss if I don't flash the firmware.

Thanks for any advice anybody can give.

This is the router I am wanting to go for. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-049-AS

Should be as easy as going from LAN1 on the Openreach modem to the WAN connection on the N66U.

You then want to set up PPPoE connection in the Asus using the sky credentials. That should be about it.

You should have posted in the Sky Fibre thread, lots of info how to setup the N66U up there. Essentially because of MER you simply cannot just plug the N66U in to the OR modem and hope it works, you need to put either Merlin or DD-WRT firmware on the N66U so that you can pass over the username/password which you have already obtained.

It's fairly easy to put either firmware on, but for novice users I would recommend Merlin and for more experienced network savvy users, then use DD-WRT.

Simple really ...

Ahh thank you for the help :) doesn't sound as difficult as some other forums were making it out to be. I'll have a read through the sky fibre thread. I should have looked for it before posting ><.

Most would recommend Tomato over DD-WRT. Haven't used DD-WRT for years so I can't say for myself.

Merlin firmware releases for the N66U: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/2324w3jh7e4q4/

Flash as a normal Asus firmware update, then hard reset the router (factory settings), and away you go.
