overclock! the E6600 is beggin for it. And yes you should be ok with just a decent graphics card upgrade. I still can run games ok at 1920x1200 but still looking to upgrade to something like a GTX275 or 5850, which should see me through next year. get yourself something similar maybe a 4870 which is priced well 
my advice is find out which E6600 you have which motherboard ram you have post it under the overclock forum and get some help with overclocking it end of the day if u go to far u only have to reset the jumper just make sure you get a cooler first for it if you need help with overclocking theres a lot of people on this forum who will help you.
what happens if he cannot clock that cpu upto 3.4, his board might not even support OCing, easy for everyone to say overclock it, get 4gb, get an old 4890, when the people saying this are running i7's, gtx295's, quad cpu's, sli, 5850's in their rigs
yeh , hahahaha , unless he is rolling on a big system he will not be getting playable fps (imo) on high res/1080p
To be able to play most games to a decent standard, you need a dual or quad @ approx / ideally 3.0+, 2 - 4 gb ram depending on the operating system, adequate cooling, and approximately a 1gig video card.
Some say even 512mb video is fine though in my experience it wasn't but each to their own. This will enable him to turn up most settings to the maximum, just forget things like AA. At that res it probably won't be as much of an issue anyway.
People complaining about the motherboard etc i spend abit more you get free delivery with having a 250 posts + 3 month account, £288 this build will give you good overclocking from the motherboard nice cooling and if all else fails you can allways get a E5300 (i see 3.8ghz from mine)in later months or even a E8400 when they drop in price.

C2D 2.33ghz - 4gb ram - m7950gtx - vista.
That tore through CoD4 giving me 40-60 fps at 1920x1200. Sacrificed a little eye candy but the game was still beautifully playable on a laptop.
You don't need the latest and greatest to enjoy the games with decent eye candy and decent frame rates (more is better ofc)
@OP got any idea about your motherboard / PSU? Did you used to have dedicated GFX in that rig for BF2?

If you were to double your budget you could get CF 5770s, 4gb+ ram, P2 X4 and new mobo on AM2+/AM3.
As said before, don't go console route. If you wanted to play games at 1280x720 with 2-4xAA (Sony/Microsoft's definition of upscaling...) your current rig could do that with a £60 card.

I originally bought the system for gaming in mind but was going to wait for the gfx card (hence the pretty decent PSU) but in the end never had the time to do so.
The reason why I suggested the console route was the ease to sit down on the sofa in front of the TV, maybe play some co-op with the gf etc... It's a tough one since I have never really seriously upped the resolution on games (1280x720 on BF2 at med/low detail was the limit!).

HX 520w is a good psu and should run all those parts i posted if u can strech to the parts i listed you should be able to get that cpu to 3.4Ghz others can with EP43 chipset if you tweak and deffo to 3Ghz which will see you gaming for sometime inc on new titles.
The motherboard has to go really.
onboard grahpics for gaming is useless if and that chipset is garbage you would actually see a huge improvement with a P43 esp with overclocking / ease of overclocking genreal speed.

you sorta shot yourself in the foot buying that case.. esp for a gaming system some 3d cards won't even fit in that, your board does say it can overclock i would upgrade the cooler and get the 4890 and start tweaking on the current board and the memory compatabilty needs checking the one i listed or at the very least it would run a lot slower the chipset it's self isn't very good to start with.
