Getting back into PC Gaming

Fair play. The xps would be a good shout with some upgrades. go for that.

Alienware charge to much for their leds and such.

Have fun whichever you choose. You wont be dissapointed with pc gaming when you look at the witcher 2 on high.

Not sure the question was about the laptop in fairness folks - if that's what he wants then who are we to say otherwise (I'm biased as I have a m17x and lurve it!)

Still steam is your best route tbh pal, might need to mix n match between buying on steam or if cheaper and steamworks by retail and activate key on steam

The difference in price between the two isn't that great considering the difference in performance :-

Do you find the M17x comfortable to use on your lap for normal browsing?

not particularly, but to be honest it's normally on a desk/table anyway - I travel a fair amount with work so a mobile gaming solution... also it's so I can game in my media room and not be unsociable with my housemates by sitting in my room!

I got mine about 6 weeks ago, lovely bit of kit, have no issues - and runs everything i've thrown at it so far; though I ordered a SSD for it yesterday :D muahahah

Ive found origin to be quite decent, even though its in beta

i purchased mirrors edge for £5 and activated the retail key and it allowed me to run without cd. plus gave me bonus content.

although the choice of games is rubbish compared to steam. the upcoming BF3 will only run with origin.

If they update the prices to fall inline with the US then i'll be happy purchasing items but im not enthralled as yet. Still its good to know

Nope, not really had a need - temps have been ok; and wouldn't trust myself doing that to be honest... maybe down the line when warranty run out and I may need to OC the GPU a bit more...

I have... (no SSD/6990 options when I ordered)

Base
Alienware M17x Stealth Black
8192MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x4096]
2GB GDDR5 AMD® Radeon™ HD 6970M w/ PowerXpress
640GB (2x320GB) SATA Raid 0 "Stripe" (7,200rpm) Dual HDD
Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 2720QM (2.20Ghz, 6MB, 4C)
17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD

2x320GB will soon be a 128GB Crucial M4 SSD + 500GB 7200 WD HD

(poor quality photo's but camera on charge!)

Hi, im getting an Alienware m17x. I've been out of PC gaming for a long time now and am going to buy quite a few games when I get the laptop. These are the games i'm getting :-

<snip>

Now I can save quite a lot of money and download time by buying the games on disc instead off Steam. Which of the above games don't require the disco in the drive to play? And which games require a net connection everytime I wish to play?

If you buy the DVD version of the game, it will almost certainly need the disk in the drive. That hasn't changed.
If you buy from steam, you won't.
If you buy from another download service, like Direct2Drive, Impulse, GamersGate, GreenManGaming, GetGames, Gog.com, or EA's own download service, you will need to activate the first time you run the game, but can forget it after that.

Since you have a lot of games on your list, you don't have to buy them all at once. All these sites run frequent sales. Steam is best for this, but they all do it. Keep an eye on them, and pick them up when they are close enough to your retail prices to make it worth it. I have used all of the services above, and would do so again.

Here's a site which shows up-to-date discount information for several sites:
http://www.steamgamesales.com/?cc=uk
(despite the name, it's not just for steam)

Edit to add:
Very few games require a net connection every time you play.
Games that use Games For Windows Live have two options. You have to setup an Offline or Online profile. You can create both, but can't share saves between the two. So if you choose Online, you have to be able to get online everytime you play. If you choose Offline, you can play without a connection, but you don't get to take advantage of online features, like multiplayer, achievements, etc. For some games this doesn't matter. I know the following games on your list use GFWL: Batman AA, Dead Rising 2, Dirt 3, Resident Evil 5. There may be others - if this matters, check your list.

Also, Crysis 2 seems to need a logon each time you play. I haven't tested if the game permits you to play if that logon fails, or if you need to be online while playing.

Some Ubisoft games require a constant online connection, but none of them are in your list (except maybe Assassin's Creed Brotherhood - you'll need to check).

Never realised that you have to be logged in for GFWL - shame it doesnt work like the 360 and allows offline play with a live profile :/

Save yourself some money by only buying a couple of games and finishing them before buying more. If steam sales have taught me anything it's that buying a whole bunch of games at once means you've just spent money on games you'll never play.

Unless you have literally nothing else to do in your life, that's an insane list of games that you'll have sitting on your system for months, if not years unplayed!:) Spread the purchases over some sort of realistic timescale and you dont have to worry about download time/bandwidth and can probably still save money by taking advantage of Steam sales when they occur. No discs to worry about then.

As above I personally couldn't stand gaming on a laptop. Even a 17" screen is piddly! And the keyboards - eeewwww. Major +1000 to the suggestion of a proper desktop for gaming and a lappy/netbook/tablet for when you really need mobility.

Agreed. Buying a load of games in one go is never good - not just financially, but in terms of getting the most out of them as it's too easy to jump from game to game to game.

Very useful info, Thanks MeMeMeMe

Do I create the online and offline profile for GFWL in each individual game itself?

Glad to help!
Yes, you create the profiles inside each game. When you start a game for the first time, you'll be given the option to create a profile. This will be an online profile by default, you have to look carefully to find the link to create an offline profile. Whichever choice you make, you can do the other later.

Another gotcha to be aware of with GFWL games: You need a separate client, the Games For Windows Live Marketplace, and need to set up a windows live ID to use it (if you don't have one already).
If you don't have the client installed before you install one of these games, you'll be prompted to do it during the game install - and 9 times out of 10, this will fail. Badly. So you need to get it installed first.
You can download it here:
