Its been over 2 years since i last went running, and im thinking of getting back into it. Im not unfit as i go to the gym and have been for about 4 years. But since i stopped running my goals have changed completly and ive been just lifting weights to get big and strong. The only cardio i do is like 5 mins on the crosstrainer at the start of my gym session, i ride my bike to work which is about a mile. And my warehouse job is pretty active aswell.
Like i said i go gym (4 times a week) my diet is pretty good and i dont drink or smoke.

My plan is to go running twice a week, probably sunday and thursday, as i go to the gym tues, wed, fri and saturday.
Im not looking to train for any races or anything, i also dont wont it to have an effect on my strength training.
What i want from it is to improve my fitness and lose bodyfat (does running make you lose body fat?). Im not fat or anything even though im 6ft and 14stone 5 pounds but thats due to lifting weights. But ive noticed that im starting to get a bit of fat on my sides and under my arms. Im sure its to do with my high protein and carb diet and my body not using it all and my body not burning the rest off...does that sound correct?

Anyway im gonna save some money and probably next week ill go to bath and have a gait analysis and see what shoes they recommend.

Ive already read the sticky.

Right, it's not a running thread it's a 'I'm fatter than I want to be thread'?

Reduce your kcals and carry on as you are or just get running to balance the kcal in v out

Nah, get running anyway, makes you healthier if you don't currently so much cardio :)

I was in a similar situation and I'm very loosely following the 'couch to 5k program'. There's one on the NHS direct website that's a good start for anyone getting back into it. Worth a read at least

First of all, go to a specialist shop and get your gait done as you have said. The right shoes are a must.

I was getting painful shins something rotten and went to the Sweat Shop where I needed medium support shoes which worked out that Asics Gel GT 2160s were the most suitable for me. The difference is noticeable straight away. I got them for 60 quid in a sale, reduced from 90.

I started running in March and I do 3-5 3 mile runs a week and I hated it for the first 3 weeks. I now enjoy it and treated myself to a GPS watch as to record what you have done is quite a motivator.

Im pretty sure i would go to a running specialist shop to get a gait analyis. But im not a 100% sure how important it is, as when i used to go running. I went down to some sport shop bought £20 puma running shoes and had no problems and i went running for about 2 years.
Also theres a father and son who have done triple marathons and other big runs. And the father has done the same as i done, but the son has had proper shoes recommended at a specialist running shop.
