Looking at getting full bike licence and wondering if anyone has managed to do it outside of doing a 4-5 day course that costs in excess of £600. I know some clubs used to provide training to thier members to help them but I have yet to look and ask around. Has anyone here gone outside the norm and got training elsewhere?

Background: was riding a few 125s for 5 years day in day out, regardless of weather. It's been about 6 years since then (now 29) and I've missed it ever since, so want to sort out full licence and get a bike (say SV650s)

So you have the CBT, you then need to take the formal bike test and wait 2 years to move above 33 bhp IIRC or take the £600 DAS course. Could always fit a restrictor, but will cost £300 anyway. DAS all the way IMHO

cbt's only last three years last time I checked so you probably need to do that again, you'll also need to do a theory test aswell

do it asap imo as the laws are always changing its already a pain in the ass to do

Yeah so you'll need to do your CBT again and the Motorcycle Theory, then you move onto the Mod1 and Mod2. If you're going to do a weeks intensive course then I'd advise to do you theory first or you won't be able to do your Mod 1 and 2, so get that booked as the places go fast. Then you can do your CBT in the intensive week or separately depending on preference.

Good question actually, in total, how much is it from a car drivers view, full car licence, nothing else.

I told my girlfriend it cost me just over £1,000 for my lot. Which was before the new rules came in.

I'm talking about CBT, full licence test, bike hire, exam etc. Everything she needs to have a full bike licence in a short time (will get her a 125 chopper or something and take her to carparks on it and teach her.

Cbt is 100 or so here and have been quoted 630 for a 4 day course. Thinking ill see what bike clubs are around and see if they offer anything cheaper

As far as I know you don't NEED to do a course do you? Surely just CBT, Theory and then take the tests on a big bike when competent?
I did my CBT in November and been riding a 125 since then. Planning on going for an hours evaluation at a local school (who I did a 'Get On' ride with and were very good) who will hopefully be telling me I just need a day of tuition to prepare for the tests then a day for tests.
If I've got this wrong the money I've budgeted for 2 days + tests aint gonna cut it!

You don't need to. I rode a 125 for 15 months, then took both tests (had 4 hours of lessons before mod 2) and passed first time.

I did my CBT back in July, rode most days since then, got about 2500 miles under my belt on a 125 then went for my theory test and Mod1+Mod2. I did it through a school for £400, which included Mod1+2 fee, and 4 other 2 hours lessons. Plus all the other stuff, bike hire, fuel etc. etc.

As it was a collection of lessons they let me book it as and when and in total took me about 3 weeks to go from theory test pass to Mod 2 pass. Not seen your location but if you're anywhere near manchester the school was mototechnique, highly recommended, especially as most of the other schools i was finding were £450+, some not even including test fees.

Just as an update, the bike I moved up to was an SV650S :p Pictures in 'show us your bike' thread

PM me if you want to ask anything else :)

Started looking around for alternatives to the intensive courses and found THIS. At £30 for 3 hours (inc bike hire) I think it's much more manageable, especially when I dont have a lot of cash to put in to it right now

I've spent about £900 learning, with two attempts at my Mod 2 and all the trains and taxi's to get around :p

Then another 2k on a bike, £700 on gear and £350 on insurance

that does seem very good. May be a good idea toask them how much they'll charge for Mod 1+ Mod 2. £30 for 3 hours is really good, but it'd even out if they're charging stupid prices for tests, although in theory it doesnt take 3 hours to do the test so may be just the same price and you would pay and book for your own tests.

I don't think they actually do the tests as they are an MMC that just offer the training from what I can see, but if I could use thier bike for the tests as well it would work out a fair bit cheaper I recon.

I rode a 125 daily for about 8 months and then passed my theory test. I then took this option of 3 days training for £450 + £90.50 test fees http://www.beginbiking.com/prices/

The days were broken down like this and I chose to spread them out over a couple of weeks.

day 1 - mod 1 training
day 2 (half day) - mod 1 test & mod 2 training
day 3 - mod 2 training
day 4 (half day) - mod 2 training & test

I passed first time.

Are they going to use a 125 for this or a big bike?

My CBT was £90
Theory £31
Mod 1 ~£190 Passed that and booked the Mod 2 for the following week. ~ £290. (i think)

Mod 1, had a lessen on one day, test a day or two after. Mod 2, had a lesson and the test soon after.
