Getting Bike On Tick

sorry easy rider, what i mean is i have a CBT at the moment but will be going for full DAS because the insurance is the same weather i ride a 125 or 650.

There is a reason that it's £900 a year. You are very inexperienced as a rider, simple as that. As such you are more than likely to throw the bike down the road. Throwing a cheap bike down the road may well end up being repairable without having to claim off your insurance. Throwing £7500 of bike down the road will involve having to claim. If you then think £900 for this year looks expensive........................just wait until you see what it's going to cost you next year

This, ive seen sports bikes wrote off because of a few scratches/cracks in one side of the fairing. I would strongly recommend going for second hand as Kit said, its your first bike. if you want "new" you could probably snap something up with a few thousand miles on it for a lot less then buying new.

Are you sure about this ? How old are you & how many quotes have you got ?
One of my 125's can be insured for as little as 80 quid although I chose a better deal for a bit over a hundred, My other 125 is 169 quid but that's for fully comp with Untold add ons, Hire bike/car, new leathers, put you up in a hotel for 48 hours to recovers etc etc etc
I am as old as the hills though obviously but I find it hard to believe a 1T & a 650 are the same to insure.

Triumph Street Triple £6,299
An outstanding bike that performs better than the 796 despite giving away 128cc. The handling is superior, the engine is an appealing snarling triple, it has a better fuel range, it looks good, it's cheaper and it's British.

Hmm, even as a new rider, after doing your DAS, it sounds a bit weird that insurance would be the same on a 125cc and a 650cc.

Would it not be better to plonk down like £1k on an old cbr or something at this time of year, still plenty of power there but if you come off it, then there's not gonna be such a massive sting to your wallet.

I just got a CBR 600 F2 for 1.1k in pretty awesome condition.

I thought i got a pretty good deal considering despite how old it is it still runs perfectly and has plenty of oomph.

I thought that myself, im on a CBR 125 (with CBT) at the moment. Ive been looking to do my full direct access and get something like an SV650 and the quotes have been coming back almost identical to what im paying already on a 125.

i passed my test in june, got a triumph tt600 for around £1300 and just slid down the road alongside it the other day

im gutted the bike is totaled, if it was a new 7 grand bike i would proabley of got up and jumped infront of a car.

Mine was actually cheaper by a few quid when I went from a CBR125 to an SV650. Was same insurance company too.

My bike, cost me 1200 quid and is in MINT condition. I have had more fun on this than anything I can remember. I apreciate it's not everyones cup of tea but my point is you don't need to spend 7k on a bike to be more than satisfied with it.

Sure, we all have that dream bike that we wait until we're old enough to get. That's the point though...We wait because we can't afford it yet.

Don't buy something you can't afford, 7k is a large ammount of money to borrow especially at your age, especially for your first bike and especially for something you're likely to throw into a ditch.

yeah, they are all fair comments. i'm just having trouble finding some good second hand bikes that i like the look. i mean street triples go for about 4.5k. seems like a good enough price to me thats only a few months of saving worth away. i guess i should see how much skill i have on my DAS before i decide anything lol.

My advice would be this: Don't worry too much about your first bike. You're going to drop it, scratch it, break it, and get bored of it after about a year. Get something cheap, functional and cheap-to-insure (SV650, CB500 etc.) and once you've made all the beginner mistakes that could cost a lot on a more expensive bike, swap it out for something that's going to be your pride and joy.

Agree with most opinions on here. Spend 1.5 - 2k on your first bike. Get something where parts are plentiful and a bike thats easy to sell on when you want something else.

My recommendation would be the CBR6 (F1-F4).

I too would say don't spent more than £2k enjoy it for a year, then get what you really want.

Easy beginners choice is the SV650.

Or if you want something sportier and faster, then a Thundercat would be a decent choice. You'll get one with about 15k on the clock full history and 1 owner for about £1.5
