Getting cheap music

There is no hard info apart from reading through reams and reams of acts and laws etc. But i believe that it is probably illegal in this country, but i know that for most other countries its completely legal as your buying from another country, where their laws are most relevant. I have since read that there have been requests from the british copyrights authorities to russia to investigate, but they would not do this as by their laws it was perfectly ok.

Its certainly a grey area which will not be solved quickly.

wasn't trying to say its legit, just saying they state that it is on its website.

tried babelfishing the link but it can't translate it... just gives an error

as i said, if needed i'll remove the link to cease further agro :p

sorry, didn't mean it like it sounded. :)

I just thought it amusing that the link is in English but the page is Russian!

After reading the other posts, it is a very grey area whether it is legal or not. I'm dubious though plus as I said earlier, i'm sure the artist does not benefit at all.

link removed is fab and to quote:

You pay for the size of the file and you choose how it is encoded. DRM free as well !

Lots and lots of albums as well including some obscure/old stuff.

For the win, dubious legality though but I think you'd be pretty unlucky to get prosecuted as an individual downloader.

Can people pleaaaaase stop saying that sites like allofmp3 are illegal in the UK. They are not! I've posted legal journals before pointing out that they're not and I will do again in about 15 mins (need to go find them).

Just because you think it should be illegal, and you can't feel bothered to read statutes etc. doesn't mean you should post, as fact, that it is illegal.

Sorry, but uneducated posts like n9ne's really rile me

No-one seems to have gotten in touch with the officials here in the UK about the Russian sites legality. It's just forum policy not to mention them due to dubious legality.

I'm quite happy to pay £8 for a cd, but £5 would be the ideal price for a album i feel, i will not buy an album if it is over £8 though. Just bought the new ordinary boys album for £8 in a high street store so the prices are getting better.

EDIT: This is in relation to the russian sites, but I've not linked to them.. if this isn't ok then delete it and I apologise

BBC New - legal ok

The Independent (London), September 2, 2005, Friday, First Edition; FEATURES; Pg. 36,37, 2436 words, THE DOWNLOAD LOWDOWN; AS HMV AND VIRGIN PREPARE FOR BATTLE WITH THE MIGHTY ITUNES, RHODRI, RHODRI MARSDEN (available through lexisnexis)

Couldn't find the journals at the mo, but I'm taking tons of meds as I've got a chest infection so I'm not in the perkiest of moods at the mo.

The relevant peice of statute is s16 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 AFAIK - which, clearly you would not be breaking by downloading from them.

A little OT:

I have lots of old pre-recorded cassettes and would like these in MP3 format. If I were to do this the quality would not be great. What is the situation with downloading the MP3s of these, albeit from a dubious source, if I already own a source of the music? Is it OK because I paid for the cassette that I have these MP3s as I already own a licensed copy?

No. Technically it's illegal to even rip music from a CD you own, as stupid a law as you'll ever find IMO, but the law it is.

Although you can get a licence to cover ripping to mp3 from PPL and MCPS

Nothing Technical about it, it is illegal by UK law, what a joke tbh.

From what i can tell allof(u know what) still seems to be a bit of a legal grey area. Technically you can dowload/import one track, but only one copy is allowed and this can only be used for personal use. The RIAA hasn't said much about this site but they haven't approved anything, which means they are up to something.

All these materials are solely for personal use. Any further distribution, resale or broadcasting are prohibited. Simple.

lol, thats a bit silly, so all mp3 player owners are breaking the law if they rip their cd's onto them?

eac with hydrogen audio settings tbh

Then the law is an ass, if a law is unenforceable and broken thousands of time a day without little risk of prosecution then that law is as good as dead.

Who cares if the Russian sites are legal or not it's a waste of money, whatever you spend is going into the coffers of the people that run the site, no money is going to the record company or artist.
