getting choppy playback of 720p mkv files

I watch mkv's on a computer with the following specs and get no choopyness at all:

Win xp
P4 3.2ghz
2 gig Ram
4650 gpu

I use VLC to play my mkv's you most definetly do not need to download a mixture of codecs etc..... vlc is adequate for 95% of your media playing.

Check you harddrive space if its still choopy. Give you machine a disk defrag too.

But it works fine if I dont have a dual monitor set up

Ok so I've tried it out with duals using MPC HT, and no probs! so thats a plus, but that means its a codec problem so does anyone have any idea what codecs I might need?

Remember that if you start installing all these recommendations, you'll be dealing with codec conflicts. So even if you do an application that 'would' work, you'll still appear to have the same issue.

Best way is to start from a fresh install of windows. I've literally never played with codecs after discovering VLC player, but even though I've had no issues with splitting my desktop I've never done that with mkv files.

Your 4850 will be more than powerful enough to play an mkv file. Sounds like a missing and/or conflicting codec.

Does MPC-HC need additional codecs? I just install MPC-HC and everything is fine for me with mkv and gpu decode....

so y bother with other codecs?

and also - does vlc do gpu decode now? I thought it was cpu only...

It just occured to me, that the choppyness is most likley to be your hard disk.

Either something is accessing the disk whilst you are trying to watch your movie, or you do not have enough ram/hard disk space.

If your using vista.... well then the answer is the self evident.

Visa has an anoying habit, of churning the hard disk when the computer is not active.

If its xp or win 7 and its still choppy ...

If your comoputer specs are more than mine ( p4, 2 g ram and 4650 gpu) and you got plenty of hdd space etc...... then you might benefit from wiping your comouter clean and reinstalling operating system.

Make sure you got the latest drivers for your gpu as well.

But honstely vlc is more than adequate for watching mkv's, I do it all the time.

Additionally, is your hard disk, old, or slow?

Im not saying you need a ssd expensive hard disk to play movies, but if its an old hard disk, or has bad sectors etc.... this could be the cause.

You could run checkdisk on your hard drive as well. That will fix any bad sectors (try too)

If you dont know how to do this (sorry if im insulting your intelegence):

. Open up my computer

. Right click the hard disk, you play your movies from

. Click tools tab (click the check now button)

. In the dialogue box that appears check both the options - click start

. computer will say something like, you have scheduled a disk check on next reboot etc etc etc

. Reboot and dont touch any buttons, let the disk check happen, It may take as long as 1 hour tho, so be prepaired.

Good luck

Explain 'choppy' to me fella.
What refresh rate is your TV set to output?
What FPS is the Video source running at?

This could be nothing to do with codecs guys...

Have you googled your problem?

It seems to hint at the fact that the fps between what your montor/gpu is producing is different to the fps of the film, causing choppyness.

At least thats what others have talked about on the net.

Dont think I can help with this one.

OP has already stated it's working fine now with MPC-HT so believes a codec issue when using other apps.

I have multiple drives (running win 7 btw) and the files im playing are on my second drive which has plenty of space. It's a very weird problem. Is there a way to find out what codecs I have installed/remove them

Do you have ffdshow installed?

ffdshow tends to cause stuttering for me, so i have disabled it globally which is very easy to do with the Shark007 codec pack

Try installing SHERLOCK - The Codec Detective to see what codecs you have installed, it will also tell you if any are broken ;)

I have contacted ATI about it, they asked me to update my bios from F3 to F12 and update my chipset. This has appeared to work so fingers crossed.

btw for the people who don't wanna scroll up my mobo is gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
