Hi all,

complete linux noob here, decided to take the plunge last night with Ubuntu 8.04 after playing with in a virtual machine. I'm very impressed so far, but i'm having a couple of problems.

Looking at one of the threads here, i noticed someone using Conky. I've been trying to get it working using this simple guide:

http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/05/20/how-to-display-your-system-info-on-your-linux-desktop/

I've managed to get it installed but cant find the blank .conkyrc file in my home directory? It will run when i do alt-f2 and type conky but it's blank and white.

I'm very impressed by Linux though, i think i will be using this as my main system.

Conky does work now but will vanish from the desktop at random and then i cant see to get it back.

Anyone got any ideas?

Edit: As well, my windows installation has anti-spyware/anti-virus etc Do i need any for Linux?

Thanks for that, i'll have another go in a bit.

I've installed ubuntu on a separate drive, i have another drive in the pc with xp. Is there anyway i can get to the files on that disk in ubuntu?

Hmm i've installed ntfs-3g and my xp drive is definitely not there in places, i ran ntf3-3g and it only detected my ubuntu drive.

My xp drive is a sata drive, ubuntu is on an old ide drive with a dvd writer attached to the cable as well, does this make any difference?

Well bit of an update on this one. I original installed 8.04 while in windows and once installed i couldn't see the xp disk, so last night i formatted the 10gb disk and installed 7.04 while in the live cd and all was well once it booted up. I could see the xp disk and it's partitions once i installed the ntfs config tool. :)

I did all the updates and noticed i could upgrade to 8.04, so i thought now i can see the windows disk i might as well. It's just finished and now i can't see the xp disk again!

I think with the 7.04 install, it proves there is nothing wrong with my xp disk and it's something to do with the 8.04 install itself.

I've just tried sudo fdisk - l and it's only picking up the 10gb disk, anyone got any ideas?

I know it's really odd, as it did work using 7.04 before i upgraded. It's the 32bit version i'm using.

I've just ran the partition editor and it can only see the 10gb disk it's installed on, i really havent a clue on this one.

Listen to this for weirdness, in the boot up menu you have the option of two different kernels. 2.6.24-21 and 2.6.22.15, i thought i'd try 2.6.22.15 and the xp disk was there. I mounted it, open it up all is fine.

Great i think, i'll restart to write the kernel numbers down to post here. I'm using 2.6.22.15 now and the disk has gone again lol

Output of sudo fdisk -l

isk /dev/sda: 10.0 GB, 10007101440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1216 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xb7b2b7b2

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 1159 9309636 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 1160 1216 457852+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 1160 1216 457821 82 Linux swap / Solaris

I give up lol

edit: I've just noticed something, i just ran ntfs config and the option to tick "enable write support for internal device" is greyed out
