Hi all,

complete linux noob here, decided to take the plunge last night with Ubuntu 8.04 after playing with in a virtual machine. I'm very impressed so far, but i'm having a couple of problems.

Looking at one of the threads here, i noticed someone using Conky. I've been trying to get it working using this simple guide:

http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/05/20/how-to-display-your-system-info-on-your-linux-desktop/

I've managed to get it installed but cant find the blank .conkyrc file in my home directory? It will run when i do alt-f2 and type conky but it's blank and white.

I'm very impressed by Linux though, i think i will be using this as my main system.

Conky does work now but will vanish from the desktop at random and then i cant see to get it back.

Anyone got any ideas?

Edit: As well, my windows installation has anti-spyware/anti-virus etc Do i need any for Linux?

Is conky still running when it disappears? Check under Administration -> System Monitor. I had a similar issue - conky was running, but it would be invisible from time to time - but I can't for the life of me remember how I solved it :o

Thanks for that, i'll have another go in a bit.

I've installed ubuntu on a separate drive, i have another drive in the pc with xp. Is there anyway i can get to the files on that disk in ubuntu?

Yep, easily. I honestly thought Ubuntu had NTFS support 'out of the box' - I don't remember having to install anything to get my NTFS partitions useable. Is the XP drive not there under the "Places" menu?

nope, i've got administrator, desktop, file system, network servers, deleted items

Right. If you go into Synaptic, search for a package called ntfs-3g and install it. There may be some dependent packages as well which it'll ask you to install. I think it's that one that you need.

I also have ntfs-config installed because I used it to set my system up to mount both my NTFS partitions on start-up.

Also check in the places menu then select computer. It won't show up in the places unless you have it set to automatically mount at boot which I doubt you have done. You should find it in there and it will ask for your password when you select it.

Hope this helps!

NTFS IS supported out of the box from 7:10

He should have listed in his places menu something akin to this..

... The Capture and Render are NTFS drives. I cooked my XP drive so now use XP in Virtualbox if I need it (rarely)

Are both drives set as master and Ubuntu is Bossing XP ?

btw.. I just noticed... WTF is allegro.. apart from a crappy car I used to own ? I don't remember installing that. Did it come in with the latest updates today ?

Hmm i've installed ntfs-3g and my xp drive is definitely not there in places, i ran ntf3-3g and it only detected my ubuntu drive.

My xp drive is a sata drive, ubuntu is on an old ide drive with a dvd writer attached to the cable as well, does this make any difference?

Nope. Thats the way I ran my system till I fried my XP drive

The one on the table WAS my XP drive ( I plugged it back in wrong way round !!)

Other two are Capture and Render. Ubuntu is on a 160gb IDE in one of the 5.25 bays near the dvd burner.

quackers - try installing ntfs-config from Synaptic if you haven't already. Run it and make sure that "Enable write support for internal device" is ticked.

Well bit of an update on this one. I original installed 8.04 while in windows and once installed i couldn't see the xp disk, so last night i formatted the 10gb disk and installed 7.04 while in the live cd and all was well once it booted up. I could see the xp disk and it's partitions once i installed the ntfs config tool. :)

I did all the updates and noticed i could upgrade to 8.04, so i thought now i can see the windows disk i might as well. It's just finished and now i can't see the xp disk again!

I think with the 7.04 install, it proves there is nothing wrong with my xp disk and it's something to do with the 8.04 install itself.

I've just tried sudo fdisk - l and it's only picking up the 10gb disk, anyone got any ideas?
