My Sister recently spilt a drink over her MacBook Air which resulted in the machine being ruined. It was replaced with a new one by her insurance company, who removed the stick shaped SSD from the old one and returned it for a fee.

As this is a non standard SSD we now need to get the data from it. She was told by Apple that nobody makes anything to connect to a MacBook Air SSD like this, however, it would seem that there are some options, though they mostly look to be in the US. Further confusing, it looks as though these drives also have differing numbers of pins.

The drive is made by Toshiba, its 128GB with designation DKK4S 655-11634B after it. I think it has a 12x6 pin configuration.

Has anyone had to do similar and know of something that works, which can preferably be bought in the UK?

A service provider may be able to do it for you. Well they will be able to - we do it by using another MacBook Air to get the data. It's such a rare occurrence that we didn't buy a dedicated caddy (I didn't even know they existed to be honest).

For a one off it might work out easier just to have someone do it.

Most of the caddy solutions are fairly expensive and come from the US, so with taxes would be pretty rubbish.

Decided to go for a little adapter which converts it use a regular SATA connection, only a tenner from Hong Kong, so not too much of a loss if it doesn't work.

If you're in London get in touch with Square Group, they're an authorised Apple service provider and will no doubt be able to get your stuff off the drive with no faff. I don't suppose they'll charge you much.

I am, however it looks like they will charge at least £60, plus last time I had to deal with Square Group on behalf of the company I was working for, they let me down.
