getting engaged... where to buy the ring

What if you don't want children?

To go along the lines you are taking you're assuming that you get married, have 2.4 children, children then go to college/university and then die.

I and my wife don't want children. We feel too selfish to have them (i.e. we like our weekends to ourselves where we choose what to do, etc.). So spending a couple of K on a ring isn't that bad. It doesn't mean I love my wife more than someone who spent £500 on a ring it just means that when we were looking for rings she wanted that one and I was in a lucky enough position to be able to afford the ring she wanted.

I hate marriage. Teachers at school and stupid adverts on the television tell you life is about more than money yet they all try to tell you that spending 20K on a wedding or 4K on a ring is acceptable. If love isn't supposed to have a value, then it should be free, if its free, society shouldn't pressurise couples into spending thousands and breaking their backs to fund their marriage. They're gonna need that money for their future children.

Well if couples want to bow to pressure then that's their problem to be honest. No one forces anyone to spend thousands on rings or a wedding.
