Getting in the Police's way

Their lights and siren were on. I saw the police car approaching in my mirror early. I slowly pulled left to get out of way but I was careful and wanted to respect the highway code unless anything happened.

My car is very loud and I can still hear stuff being shouted (usually impolite and aimed at me).

Dear oh dear, how can you write such blatantly incorrect statements? Just think about the various devices fitted to a roadworthy car. You might recall that one of these devices is called a horn, which is (believe it or not) an audible warning device. That means that it is a warning device that relies on the auditory system of it's intended recipients. It's designed for people to hear it.

Now, (think carefully before answering this one,) which came first, the horn or the massive stereo pumping out drum and bass?

Sorry, but you deserve a lot of :rolleyes::rolleyes:

i once had a copper with its blues and twos behind me on a busy D/C, he needed to get somehwere. no one would let me in the nearside lane so i just booted it and left him to go find space i could pull into up ahead. i thought i found one, went to go in but it closed, by which time the coppers caught up... just i just booted it and left him again :D

Some drivers amaze me, I was on a dual carriageway today and noticed a police car with sirens on come over the crest of a gentle hill about half a mile behind me. Myself and all the other cars except one pulled over before the police car even got near.

The exception was a middle aged gentleman who held the police up for what must have been at least half a mile and seemed to have not noticed them. We then approached a roundabout and despite leaving plenty of room for the dosey fool to pull in he didn't move over, but puledl onto the roundabout into the path of traffic on the roundabout (which thankfully had all but stopped) for the police car to get past.

If I was the police officer driving I'd have been livid.

edit: And to add that unless you're on the twistiest road ever, you should notice a police car approaching even if you have music on very loud, as I'd expect to see it approaching in my mirrors before the sound gets anywhere near enough to hear.

i see it all the time PeterNem, i pull over for a vehicle with the lights/siren on, only for cars to overtake me / pass me not realising that something a few cars back is trying ot get through.

It should be done the malaysian way with an in car public address system, while out in KL a police car was trying to get past a car waiting at traffic lights and he would not move so he came over the loud speaker 'PLEASE MOVE YOUR VEHICLE NOW!" he soon moved :D

Hi there

Amazes me how did not see him, guess some people don't use their mirrors. :(

Once I saw a police car coming from behind quite far back, it was only a basic plod car so pretty slow and it was tight twisty roads, I knew there was a wider section of road not so far ahead where he could easily pass. So I planted my foot down, burnt the officer off lol and parked up where the road was wider and as they passed I got a thumbs up. :)

Now when I think back I was probably lucky they never did me for speeding but I think they were just grateful I did not hold them up and they did not need to attempt an overtake on what was double white lines and something may have come the other way.

This happens to me virtually every time I pull over to let the services through. Seriously gets on my ****.

From this experience I'll certainly remember not to put the the stereo up load. I've had my licence for around 8 months now and luckily no points. I was just concerned because he looked at me and said something when he passed. The last thing I want is getting a fine and points on my licence. I hardly drive with music loud. :(

i have my music on very loud when in the car, i still pull over before others. why? because i realise i have 3 mirrors that tell me whats going on behind me, i like to know whats going on behind, its just as important as whats happening in front of me.

learn to use your mirrors ;]

On two separate occasions in the last 20 years I have actually been forced to drive extremely quickly to get out of the way of a police car and on both occasions (though nearly 20 years appart!) I have got a thumbs up. Often when people see the police behind them they just freeze, often stopping in the middle of the road and making it hard for them to get past. This they hate more than people who don't hear them!

First time was in Heathtown in Wolverhampton (a little rough it might be said) on my way to work. I was on a dual carriageway, on the outside towards where the road went into one lane. There was nowhere for me to pull in so I dropped a cog (in my 1.6L Cav!) and floored it till I spotted a gap, and then quickly pulled in out of the way. Thumbs up from said peeler.

Second occasion was in Sparkbrook (again not quite Chelsea!) about 6 months back. One of those 4 lane roads without a central reservation and again pootling in the outside. Rozza has blues and twos on, spotted some way back, no spaces, cog dropped, 200 yards and into a gap. Again thumbs up from said Fed.

At the end of that day when they are on a call all other motorists are just a distraction they want out of the way and rest assured if you don't get out of the way a verbal diatribe may follow as they pass you.

heh, i had an ambulance come past me leaving the city towards the motorway, so i pulled to the nearside lane and let him pass, then pulled out behind him, and followed him onto the motorway. Once on the motorway the damn thing was holding me up! Went to overtake and proceeded to drive ahead of the amubalance (at 70mph) and got off at my exit. Joined the traffic at the roundabout and continued round only to be caught up again by the same ambulance. Pulled over once more and got a laugh and a thumbs up from the paramedic - hehe!
