Hi, I've finally joined after weeks of reading up on the forums, so hello firstly :)

I have my office at work which has the phone line, internet, fax etc in, and it's becoming cramped due to files etc.

I have an empty space in a unit around 100m away which is around 3x bigger then my current office, however theres no phone point etc. It also runs on a separate electric meter so homeplugs have been ruled out so far :(

I was wondering could I get a huge network cable. I understand the signal would die over distance, but is there anything that would 'boost' it?

Wireless is also out of the question given how far I would be.

This should be in the Networks & Internet Connectivity section :p

A good Cat 5e cable will do if it's around 100m. Should be able to do 100mb/1gb speeds without the need of repeaters.

Anyway welcome to the forums :)

Don't think that will work, they carry less bandwidth and could struggle over 100m. Cat 5e is the best cheapest option so far if you want decent transfer speeds between the two locations.

And that would work with a normal router?

Yeah :) Plug it into a port on your router and run it via a cable to pc. You could install it into your walls and terminate it into an RJ45 Socket so its no trailing cables, Not sure if its cheaper though. I only do it at work so wudnt know pricing

You may struggle to find a pre-terminated 100m cable.

If you can get your hands on the CAT5e/CAT6 cable, cheap pair of crimps and a couple of RJ45 connectors you should be laughing, though. (They're really easy to terminate.)

See I found a place which does it, obviously I cannot link. But they are cat5e UTP 100m rj45 male to male.

Is that the right one?

sweet, £43 though, is that normal? Ive only used 1/2m cables in the past and I dont wan't to pay over the odds for something I know nothing about.

I would personally be looking for solid core over that distance tbh :) I have googled and there is afew about. But yes that would work.

But as above CAT5e cable and RJ45 (Female) Modules are EASY to terminate :)

@£43 i think we found the same product ;)

Description
Lindy Cat 5e UTP Cable Solid Core 100m Grey RJ45 Male to RJ45 Male

This high quality cable is ideal for use with our range of CAT5 AV Extenders. The solid core design is especially suited for long distance applications as it reduces the skew problems that are common when using stranded Ethernet cable. It‘s also excellent for permanent, structured cabling network installations.
Specification
Warranty 10 years

Imo I think it's about 60m to his office, but then you add going around walls and such, if 100m wasnt long enough I'd be shocked.

You could get a 305m cat5e reel and heads/couple of faceplates and crimps for under £50 if you have lots of network stuff to install

There's also switches to consider, so when the cable reaches to his office you can add a switch so more than one device can connect to it. Or even another wireless router with DHCP disabled on it so that office will also have wireless.

What are these called. The cable is just for internet in his office, but having the printer running on the network wouldnt be a bad idea either. He'd like his fax machine in there too but without a phone point, I doubt anything would carry the signal
