Getting lag but not sure which component responsible

Wasn't sure where to post this but as it's a mix of all components possibly then I'll stick it here if that's ok.

Recently bought from overclockers a Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. B450M DS3H-CF (AM4) with Ryzen 5 3400G with Vega graphics.

Basically the kind of gaming I do isn't necessarily the type that requires good graphics, but as I still have the same problem I had before upgrading from my old i3 2700 from 2011, maybe I'm wrong on that front.

The problem I have is I play lots of tables of poker at once, most sites are fine but the one I play most is notoriously laggy, but more than playable...until reaching 20 tables. It seems to be this number and beyond where it gets so sluggish that it's having a very negative affect.

I have friends who more than 40-table with zero lag, so I know it's not the site. Asked a few for their processor details and one is an i7-7700, I did a benchtest comparison with my Ryzen and they're both equal to each other in performance, despite the Intel being 3x the price. Also, cpu usage never goes beyond 60% when being stressed the most. RAM also doesn't go past 50-60% either, so presumably those figures rule out those two things being the problem? I could be wrong there again, perhaps despite the performance figures and usage %, there could still be something hidden that makes the Intel I compared with far superior?

So the benchtest states graphics are "very poor". But I have enquired with some techs who wrote very intricate poker software and they say it WON'T be the graphics. But I can't see what else it can be?
If lag starts at so many tables, it could be the whole too much stuff on a screen, FPS rate somehow involved there, I don't know as I'm clueless about computer tech in general.

Yes the hd is SSD, 240gb, only half the space being used, also comes back as excellently performing in a test, plus a brand new windows 10 install.

So my main question is, if I'm foced to get a proper graphics card, which makes can I plug into this motherboard? AMD only or nvidia too? And does it then automatically override the intergrated side with a fairly straight forward plug n play? tia

Have you checked your gpu usage whilst running the application?
Would be interesting to see gpu load and memory usage when you have performance problems.

Re dedicated gfx card, you can run either AMD or Nvidia without issue.

Also what internet connection do you have?

Discovered this switched off in settings yesterday so will see if it helps.

Strangely just acccidentally discovered a gpu monitorer in the xbox games recorder thing than annoyingly pops up, in my attempts to turn it off I found it. Under reasonable stress it's running 80-90%

If it doesn't, leave it disabled, and turn off all other similar features (Chill for example) as they can currently cause issues. YMMV.

To be honest, since you say it happens after a certain number of tables, that doesn't sound like a driver feature issue (or input lag) but more a hardware limitation of sorts. Could be CPU threads maxed, or integrated graphics memory, if not the actual RAM. Maybe see inside the BIOS if you can increase the amount of system memory the integrated graphics can use. Although I confess I don't know if it still works like that for Radeon APUs or if it's all automatic now.

Also, another shout for on-screen display monitoring as Squid Vicious recommended. If Afterburner (+ Rivatuner) and all the settings you need to input is a bit intimidating, HWiNFO64 can be used in a pinch, as long as you don't have the poker app on full screen or borderless windowed. If it's a window/windowed mode, you'll be able to check the HWiNFO64 Sensors page in real-time for any signs of GPU or CPU maxing, GPU memory maxing, system memory maxing etc.

@marlow77 so you've seen high GPU usage when system is under load (multiple tables).
Did you have any luck monitoring video memory usage?

Does seem like a gpu bottleneck but would be good to have more data which may also help inform decision on a suitable GPU.

To be honest I'm surprised that a poker app would be that demanding on GPU - which makes me think vram may also be part of the problem.

That's all chipset has and I don't see an frequency changing options...

Indeed. The option is displayed in some pics of that board's BIOS out there, and is between the IOMMU and the SATA Mode options. But I've noticed yet others, including yours, don't display it. Might depend on BIOS version perhaps.

Other than that, RAM seems in order and the APU is using 2GB of system memory for graphics which is normal. Thanks for info.

Hope you find out how to improve perf.

Point 1 answered previously - you can use either brand.

Point 2 default option on that motherboard is to auto-detect GPU/onboard and behave appropriately.
If you have issues you can override and disable onboard gfx through Chipset->Integrated graphics option in bios.

It should all be fairly plug and play - install gfx card, plug monitor display cable into gfx card. Install drivers and off you go.

Thanks for that above answers.

Back to this though, I haven't upgraded anything yet, but am still having the same issue. I don't get the below pic though. IF you see the GPU monitoring in radeon software it regularly goes round to 100%, but in task manager that never happens. Any reason for this? Which one is lying? lol
