Getting more speed out of my connection?

I'm currently on an 8mb package but only get 512kb download. It's always been that way.

If I upgrade to the 16mb package will I get better speeds or is it my line that is the limiting factor? I *think* this is ADSL2......however their website does not mention it.

I'm with UKonline who have been mostly great the last 4/5 years.

From samknows:

"According to BT Wholesale, your phone line should be able to support a 4.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max. "

"Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL2+ broadband line rate of 6Mbps or greater."

What other info do you connection uber lords need to advise me?

Summary:

ISP: UKonline
Connection Speed: 8mb
Download speed: ~500kb
Line attenuation: 38.0 db (down), 22.0 db (up)
Noise Margin: 9 db (down), 16.0 db (up)
Exchange: 1.26km away (straight line)

Last year when I was still with UK Online I rang CS and they put me onto the 16mb package for 10mins so I could try it and see what speed I got and stability etc.

Was very helpful of them.

I just got off the phone with them, very useful. They said don't bother due to my distance and connection.

I'd get a little boost from ADSL2 but nothing worth bothering with.

You're on standard ADSL then.

As for the download, are you actually connected at 8mb? If you're only getting 512KB/s, you're connected at around 4-5mb.

Turns out i'm connected at 4992. I guess i'm so far that, that is all I can get.

:(

Post your stats, theres a few things you can do to gain speed, if not already done.

Hmmmm you know, come to think of it I do recall following tha ta year ago. I took the face plate off and there was no test socket. I guess that means my socket is an extension from somewhere else....

I had a really bad internet connection at one point. We were getting 3.9Meg though we were supposed to be on an 8meg connection. That doesn't sound too bad does it? BUT every time the phone rang the net connection would drop out, meaning disconnects in games, loss of web browsing etc.

I phoned up BT and they checked their end, which was fine so they sent out some phone repair guys, who altered our master socket so that all the internet data went to one socket upstairs as previously it had been spread out. The new socket (they fitted a new cover with a built in filter) has the router on it, which now reports 8meg download and it nolonger drops out. Apparently our builders were lazy and fitted the phone line badly...

Point being that I'd recommend you get someone to look at how your phone lines are set up as improving them might help you like it helped us.
