I have my moneys now, so it's time to buy a NAS for localized storage, print server, web server, media server and download server! £150-200 for the NAS.
I really want to get 2 drives in raid1 for peace of mind with reliability, but at 3tb per drive, it's gonna cost another £100 for that backup. Just wondering if you think it is really worth it or not, and what NAS you recommend?

DS212J

I have one and can't recommend it enough. I use mine for backing up and as a media server for my RPi media centre. Also have tvheadend installed and a usb tv adapter attached to record tv programs. Its a really versatile piece of kit.

I was planning to get the Synology DS413.

It has everything I wanted, with the exception of the CPU being not Plex compartable.....

Then Phate told me about this Netgear this morning, was recently released.

http://www.netgear.com/landing/storage/home.html

It runs everything I want, only differences is in spec, not sure if it is dual core like the Synology and it has less Ram. On paper though it looks amazing, dual network sockets as well, can run Plex, it is also £260 online, £120 less than the Synology DS413.

The netGear may have issues as well. saw this on another forum.

"I recently bought the new Netgear Ready NAS 102....with a brand new OS 6 (current version 6.0.4)

Now sadly this device appears to be a bit of rush launch, the device can't currently handle files bigger than 4gb and the tech support is a step behind the product (e.g. the HDD compatibility chart is out of date).

Does anyone have a suggestion for a reliable NAS to be used primarily as a media streamer for about £200.... "

Hopefully they can rectify these software issues soon, still a new product so will wait until proper reviews.

At the moment, the Synology DS412+ appears to be the one that does all I want for 4 bay, or the DS213 for 2 bay.

The Netgear Readynas 104 is the same price as the Synology 213 so if Netgear can sort out the bugs then it would be a bargain of a NAS.

Got the 212j set up and running with a 3tb barracuda from the MM (new) and a 1tb barracuda that i had previously. I'm getting terrible speeds though :S
I've noticed downloading from it, speeds of 6000KBs+ so that's no issue, but mounting the shared drives in windows and copying to it, i get around 11MB/s which is what i expect from 100mb and not what i expect from gigabit.

The NAS is set to 1000 in the settings, the cables are all cat6e (unless the cable that comes with it is anything different), the superhub it is directly connected to is gigabit, the linksys switch/router by my PC is gigabit and my PC is gigabit :S

I've noticed people having problems like this on various forums, but no solid fix. Does anyone have any tips? If i'm going to be using it for data storage and accessing/running documents, installers and other mumbo jumbo, gigabit is really the minimum that would be usable.

-edit, looks like a network problem. i changed the cabling to cat6 to a PC downstairs and it gives 45MB/s to the NAS and 126mb/s dl speed from the internet, but i unplugged the gigabit router by my PC here and plugged the cat6 cable directly in and it shows as 100mb on the adapter. strange, i'll bring up a new thread under networks.
