Getting new SSD, any advice please

Copy your windows home folder under C:\Users\$USERNAME$.

Make a new empty user account (same name) on the new system. Then back up the clean account.

Merge files (copy your old data across) >>> new system. Be careful not to overwrite any new profile or hidden user account files. Else restore them again from backup if such thing proves to become any issue.

I have recently built a completely new system, but regardless of that, my method to migrate to Windows 10 was as follows:

  • Install Windows 7 on new SSD.
  • Immediately run the Win 10 upgrade from the Windows 10 ISO.
  • During Windows 10 upgrade choose the 'fresh install' option (can't remember the exact phrase).
  • You now have a fresh new Windows 10 installation. You effectively just need Windows 7 for license purposes.

I decided on a totally new build as I was due one anyway, and now Windows 10 shouldn't give me any grief as I don't have to do any major upgrades for years, apart from some new SSD's and GPU in the future.

So far for me Windows 10 has been really good, no reason to revert back to Windows 7.
