Getting prepated to order macbook

Actually given the software and other hardware I need anyway it's going to be the mac book white based on price :p
 
Could someone please tell me how much the following would cost with a HE discount? (please don't mention 3rd party RAM - I've had nightmares with it in the past :p)

It's the price, without the VAT (i.e. look at the subtotal on the normal page), it's about £20-30 either side.
 
With regards to your documents, can't you export them to pdf to be marked? Teachers stipulating any proprietary file format is shoddy.

I agree, they're probably asking for Word documents because they know they won't have problems opening them (most universities would use Microsoft Office). I've seen friends hand in Microsoft Works documents which didn't go down too well.

They shouldn't have issues with a PDF, so I can't see them complaining so long as they can open it. They were the same way when they asked me to hand in studio recordings (they preferred the ProTools session file and audio files)

Have a chat with the University. Like I said, they can't complain at a PDF but you might want to raise the point about Mac users.
 
My girlfriend took this short distance learning course recently on top of a full time job. Having worked until the early hours of the morning to finish an assignment, she then had to resubmit the following day because the marker couldn't open a PDF file.

If it were me I'd be kicking up all sorts of a fuss but I guess it's not wise to challenge the person who's marking your work, especially when you'll never meet them face to face. Even if they are blatantly incompetent.
 
It would be quite shoddy for any university now not to accept pdf files. We have to submit paper and electronic copies of our assignments and I just submit the pdf version when needed (although they even accept WordPerfect versions apparently!).

OS X built in PDF support ***!
 
Well I've almost finished selling all my old tech stuff to get a mac book white for uni. The spec I'm likely to go for is 4GB Ram, 120GB Hard drive and get a dvi converter to connect it to my samsung monitor (and get wireless keyboard and monitor when I get the funds).

The Apple Wireless Keyboard is awful to type on. Try it before you buy it, if possible. It chews batteries like no ones business too.

Also, do not even consider an Apple mouse. They are terrible, terrible devices.
 
Well, I disagree on the keyboard. I've got a mac mini as a media pc and a wireless keyboard that has had the same batteries for the last 3 or 4 months. It is exactly the same to type on as the full sized wired keyboard.

The (wired) mouse I also like, with the exception of the ball rollers having needed to be cleaned this week after 9 months of heavy use. I'd have taken in to a mac store and got a replacement, but for the fact I'm living in Gran Canaria where there isn't one. It was in fact pretty easy to clean and is now good as new. In use I particularly like being able to scroll sideways and would miss it if I moved to another mouse.

I can scroll sideways on a Logitech MX518, just push the scroll wheel to the right.

I'd also disagree that the mighty mouse is a decent mouse. It's got a terrible un-ergonomic function that hurts my hand and the side buttons feel flimsy. That is your opinion though, so don't take this the wrong way. I'm stating mine :)
 
Sure, it's a kinda like it/hate it thing. :)

It would seem feasible to me that some of these supposedly ergonomic mice might actually be worse for your hand because they force it into a claw shape. With the mighty mouse, my hand barely touches the surface, is basically the same form as if it weren't holding anything. As it's so light, with movement sensitivity set high a barely move my hand at all, and the buttons are really sensitive. The side buttons are a undoubtedly a complete waste of time but I never used extra mouse buttons when I was on a Linux PC.

All that being said, it's purely an individual preference and the scroll ball really isn't durable enough. I remember cleaning compressed dirt from most mice in the labs, particularly when I was at Uni, and thought those days had gone. Surely it would have been possible to have an optical sensor on top of the mouse to detect finger movement? Oh, and I had a mouse that would scroll by clicking the mouse sideways but it's not nearly as usable in my opinion.

Don't know why I rambled on as long as I did about this, don't want to come across as being too avid or whatever.
 
Well I ordered my macbook white today - third apple product I will have had, the other two being ipods. Also got me a DVI adaptor so I can put it into my monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse (will see if I love it or hate it) so I can write essays from my bed :)
 
The new aluminium keyboards are terrible, feel naff and chew through batteries. The Mighty Mouse is probably the worst mouse I've ever used.
 
Anyone know where they ship apple stuff from. My macbook and stuff got shipped today it says but delivery date is 28th which seems a bit long
 
Could be from anywhere in the world. I've had them from Shanghai and the Czech Republic.

They are almost always delivered before the estimate.
