Getting rid of tailgaters?

Sure is, isn't it :)

You are more likely to infuriate the bloke and if you do that to the wrong one don't be surprised if you both come up to a set of red lights and Captain' Rage' gets out of his car and decides to kick yours in. Very bad advice imo :p.

You're in a car, aren't you? :p

Yep, if you enjoy having a screwdriver rammed through your skull by an irate person in a hurry.

Don't be so scared lol, cars go slightly faster than a human can run. So, if it is some mad guy in the car with a screwdriver then just pull away

Let the fool pass, otherwise there may be a chance one of either parties involved will exceed their talent. I'd rather take my balls home intact rather than smeared like jam over tarmac.

Just an idea, like.

You might well be a rational person but you do not know anything about the person behind you.

So you decide to "teach him a lesson" by dropping to 15mph and hindering his progress. That's fine. He's driving an uninsured £300 Ford Granada which he promptly rams through your boot. Then he gets out and hits you quite a lot.

You really showed him, didn't you?

I didn't say you'd stop, I said you'd slow right down to annoy him so he'd pass you or whatever he pleases to do.

If it is some guy that will stress out and attack your car if you do something then surely you take more risk of him doing that by pulling over as then you'll be just sitting there... ? :)

Craig.

pull over and let them past..... however much people will question the 'try out left foot braking for the first time' tactic and say its irresponsible.. tailgating isnt exactly the most sensible thing in the world to do !!

(I should say, ive never been stupid enough to slam the anchors on when some moron is that close to me)

Bright rear fogs are fun, slowing down is what most driving instructors will tell you to do, speeding up endangers your licence (esp if your a new driver), and if you pull over and let them pass they've won.

Apart from my imaginary award and small plastic trophy for an honourable mention in being a ****, what exactly did they win?

Guessing your not letting the clutch out again between 5th and Reverse
Still in most cars you'll get a lovely grinding noise if you attempt that

Not that I ever have (much :p )

Slowing down is NOT what instructors should be advising! The Highway Code states to carry on as normal.

If you let them pass they've "won"? What the heck are you talking about, it isn't a battle!

No wonder people get their heads caved in by random aggravated psychos on the road.

Im fairly new to the roads, and this seems a pretty common and annoying thing, especially at night. Whats the best trick to pull to make them pull back? Got fed up tonight and flashed my brake lights (not enough to slow car, jsut to turn lights on) and he then backed off.

Bar speeding up whats the easiset way to get rid of these planks?
Don't drive so slowly?

If however you are driving at a reasonable speed and you still have a tailgater then pull over, slow down, indicate left and let them past. Some tailgaters are so stupid however, that even when you do this, they will brake as well, and not overtake until you slow down to a crawl - and even then they only do it reluctantly. And then they proceed to drive along at the same speed you were doing in the first place...

Slowing down is what the highway code says in order to reduce the possibility of a multiway accident and you being sandwiched between the car behind and in front.

personally I use the windscreen washer jets, if that doesnt work I will slow down for a minute or so then go back to normal speed.

Other options are rear fog light or hazards
