Getting rid of the Windows security alerts?

Is this possible?

The red icon is really annoying as I don't want to turn on automatic updates.

Control Panel / Security Center / Change the way my security center alerts me

Just untick the one you don't want alerted.

Or you could just disable security centre from services. A better option imo

Bang on. I just check for updates manually about once a week.
