Long story short, switched a users windows phone last week. For some reason although all auto back up setting being on and me making multiple backups nothing was being restored on to the new handset. When I looked in to the backups the phone was saying it had made a back up of 0 bytes out of 30Gb.

6 hours passed and I was still unable to get the new handset to sync the settings/theme/data from old handset to new.

I did an Google search on a new problem and came across the fact that although the global auto backups are set, there are individual backup options in the various apps (sms??) Can some one verify if this is true?

For this scenario it doesn't matter now as the user has been using new handset and took old handset for sms reference. If I managed to get the sms to backup and restore from new to old handset I'm guessing any sms sent/recived since on new handset will get lost?

Anyway, not a bridge I care to cross. They are going to ask me tomorrow to get the sms off her old handset and on to the PC.

Is there windows app that will backup the sms and save it in to readable format for viewing on the PC?

Quick Google finds this
With the contacts+message backup app there is now an official way to export your texts. This app only used to work on devices with SD Cards, but has been updated to work on all devices as far as I can tell.

After installing the app, open it from your settings menu (you won't see it in your installed apps list). If you do not have an SD Card in your phone, use the appbar menu to choose a folder for your backup.

Afterwards you can choose what you want to backup - either sms, mms, contacts, or all of them.

SMS and MMS will be stored as an XML file which you should be able to convert to any format you need.
