Getting Temps right.

Morning all,

Im getting ready to begin overclocking my system however before I start I want to make sure that the temps are ok because I think they are a little high.

Im using a gigabyte aurora case with the standard fans (1 x 120 at the front and 2 x 120 at the rear)

The CPU is a Q6600 cooled by an akasa AK-922 evo cooler.

The temps I am currently getting are CPU average 49-65 depending on what I am doing and a case temp of 55 (both deg C)

Are these high or ok??

Bunch of questions:

1) What stepping is the CPU? B3 or G0?
2) whats your idle temp after windows has finished loading?
3) Run Prime95 for 30 minutes at no overclock, and whats your reported core temps then?

Use a program like RealTemp or Coretemp to report the temperature. CoreTemp is my personal favourite.

Havent tried the prime95 yet but on startup I got system 45 and CPU 45. Core Temp agreed with the temps on the cpu.

The rev of the CPU is G0. I will try the test later once Ive finished work

Tbh that temps blows for stock speed q6600. I'd expect it to be lower at idle.

I would try this however, as Isuspect you have a problem with either clean fresh air to the CPU cooler, or the CPU cooler itself.

Try booting from cold, with the side of the case off, and see what your temps are like. If you get a significant reduction(10c+), you may need to improve the case airflow somewhat

If this is not the problem, try remounting the cooler. It may be a slightly off install, and some decent tIM always helps instead of stock white goo.

Failing both of those solutions, try a new Cooler. What you have is not the best cooler on the market by a long shot. the temps you are getting are possibly what I'd expect from clocks with stock Intel cooling solution.

Thanks for the info. I had a good look at the cooler and brought some new thermal paste just in case.

Found the problem while tidying up the old paste. The so called expert who belt my computer had left the plastic cover on the bottom of the heat sink. The computer is now running 35 deg idle and the case temp as dropped....

The thing is Ive been running this set up for over 2 months...I do feel lucky

Frankly I'm surprised it cooled at all or even fit with the cover still on :/

Oh well, now you can overclock
