well after several problems with my new Broadband installation (UKFSN Office 45) and having read a few sites, I need an easy guide on how to imrove my BB speed. My current BT Voyager 100 ADSL USB Modem syncs normally around 3.6meg yet seems to be only getting around 1meg down and 384k (should be 884)
having spoken to UKFSN they have advised changing the modem for a router which I am going to do, this they said may result in a faster download speed as they think the modem is holding me back. Whether this is right or wrong I dont know however I need a router anyway
but having read a number of other sites etc I think my whole broadband set up may need looking at. TBH previously I was on 512k and thats what I got so I have pretty much the absolute basic set up.
i.e I have 4 phone sockets in the house, 2 downstairs one in the kitchen and one in the dining room (dining room does not have a phone attached) and the main socket.
The main socket has a two way splitter which is used as follows the first connnection there is a telephone line which is the extension line which is the telephone extension to the study where Iuse the BB. The second socket is used for the main downstairs phone. This is the only socket in the house that has a Microfilter attached. Yep thats right folks, one microfilter and its a old cheap and nasty one at that. But previously this all worked so I never nbothered or saw the point in buying any more 
Having read around it is best to have a microfilter wherever theres a phone ? If this is the best case that would mean buying an additional microfilter which isnt a problem, however I have my BB connected directly to the extension socket upstairs, there is no phone here but would it also be best to have a microfilter here as well ?
I had a budget of around £50 for my router, but looking at the things i might need to do this can increase.
Are there other things i need to do / consider ? would the cheap microfilters be ok or do I need professional ones etc etc.
any help would be greatly appresiated.
