Getting the most out of i5 set-up (slightly dissapointed)...... help please

Yes it matters a whole heap if you have the latest BIOS. As the latest BIOS is the one that enables TOUCHBIOS. :)

One other thing you will need to have .Net installed. I have been assuming you are running Win7 SP1. Mybad :(

And do not worry about the 3DMark06 system information being incorrect. That is sadly pretty normal for futuremark.

Not your bad at all - I have Win7 SP1 and the latest version of .NET...... just didn't have the F8 version bios - will have another go tonight.

My question was though - if I'm currently OCed to 4Ghz using ET6 - now that I've uninstalled ET6 and can't de-clock back to normal.... is it still ok to flash the bios....?

What you will need to do is set defaults in the bios and they flash. You do not want to flash your BIOS over-clocked.

Will check back when I get back in later tonight.

Ah ok... thanks HiViz..... not exactly sure what the defaults are though to do it manually in the bios....

Would I be better off installing ET6 again.... putting the setting back to default and then uninstalling it again ready for the flash.....

Or can anyone recommend how to set everything back to default in the bios manually?

Thanks again all...!

In that case go into the BIOS, select load fail safe defaults, save and exit.

I've just realised, that this could all be academic..... as I don't actually know if I even DID overclock it with ET6 - as mentioned, I wasn't sure it had actually worked.....

How can I tell definitively that it has been overclocked?

Here's a grab of CPUZ when it is just sitting doing nothiing....

But then I see it occasionally jump up to this..... (is this the turbo boost feature rather than an OC?)

cpuz4-0.jpg

Yet Windows is reporting this.... @3.3Ghz 4GHz..... so what is the deal gents?

That's certainly not the normal TurboBoost for a 2500K.

The normal TurboBoost settings will go this far:

1 core stressed 3.7GHz
2 cores stressed 3.6GHz
3 cores stressed 3.5GHz
4 cores stressed 3.4GHz

Ok thank you..... so what are we saying here...? I did manage to set some sort of OC using ET6?

It just idles at 1.6Ghz and occasionally jumps to 38 or 40x if I move the mouse over a window in the task bar for example.... is that right?

EDIT: and why is the windows properties screen showing 4Ghz??

It looks like you've done some form of overclock.

1.6GHz is the speed the CPU downclocks to when idle to save power. It's Intel SpeedStep at work.

It looks like CPU is clocking up to 3.8 or 4.0GHz when you do simple tasks. This seems a bit odd as it doesn't normally do that until you do something more CPU intensive.

I assume Windows properties is showing 4.0GHz as that's what your overclock is.

Some systems seem to show this and some don't. My processor is overclocked to 4.6GHz but Windows properties still says i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40Ghz.

Popped into the bios this morning on boot and had a look at the clock settings to see if I could find what ET6 had done:

clock ratio 33x
core1 turbo 37 [41]
core2 turbo 36 [40]
core3 turbo 35 [39]
core4 turbo 34 [38]

Sooooo......

1) Am I right in thinking that ET6 has NOT actually Oced the system.... just put up the turboboost clock speeds?

Also, before I go setting back to fail-safe defaults in the bios and flashing it with F8 version..... should I install the Intel INF from here: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3855#driver

Seems my version is probably at that from the driver CD I got with the motherboard...(which was well after February as the Z68 board didn't come out until May)?

Edit: just realised the the Intel INF is a utility to get latest definitions for device manager..... doh! I'm so rusty at this ****...... :(

Righto.... loaded optimised defaults and the turbo boosts figures were set back to [auto]....

Flashed bios to F8....

And TouchBios is now working! Woot! :)

Will have a play at OC the graphics and using HivVizMans normal overclock guide in his signature and report back....

Finally getting somewhere....

Ok.... after ENABLEing the "Real time ratio changes" in the bios.....and restarting..... that is when I had the real slow touchbios loading.... in fact it wouldn't load on first click from the start menu - process menu showed it.... but wouldn't load... until 2nd click .... (and it was taking 25% of CPU.

ALSO - windows properties showed @3.30Ghz 5.80Ghz...! Hope I haven't fried anything...! :(

Now I've set the "real time ratio changes" back to disabled..... touchbios starts in seconds and Windows properties is back to @3.30Ghz 3.60Ghz....

Any ideas anyone... please?

When did the guide in my sig, you needed to enable the real time change in bios. That has now been made redundant. I will change that soonest.

You do not have to do anything in BIOS any more. Just use the TOUCHBios.

Ah right, ok, that makes sense then. Strange how it was behaving so oddly though...

So using your guide....

Do I still set the memory settings to XMP profile 1...? My RAM setting goes to greyed out AUTO after this...

And I don't seem to have an option for Load Line Calibration... might be because my board isn't as funky as yours...?
