Getting the Windows 11 look in 10….

On the road....
Having recently seen a friend’s new Win 11 built PC, I liked the look of the U.I. over 10, which has made me wonder if I should give 11 a go.

But, fundamentally my current 10 install runs well, my 4790K isn’t supported (although I read I can by pass certain checks and install it anyway if I really want to) but, my obvious solution is to just make 10 look like 11 via something along the lines of a “Start is back” type of thing.

So, is this a thing and if so what’s the goto method?

Or, do I just throw the security concerns to the wind and go ahead and install 11 anyway on my 4790K system?

:)

I would go with the upgrade, see my post here from earlier in the day on how to bypass the hardware requirements.

Having upgraded to an ultrawide monitor around the same time I upgraded to Windows 11, the central position of the taskbar icons is the the most useful feature.

PM me if you need an ISO
I’ll drop you a PM later today, I’m certainly interested. :)
Use this tool to check the other system requirements of Windows 11 as there's more to it than just CPU:

My opinion is it's not worth installing Windows 11 on an unsupported system unless you plan on still using that system in 2025 when Windows 10 support ends. Most people won't want Windows 11 until it has the ability to never combine taskbar items, which is expected later this year.
I’ve previously checked and my 4790K isn’t supported, a lack of TPM 2.0 being the main issue I think, I’ve looked into getting a 2.0 TPM module for my ASUS Z97 Pro Wi-Fi board as it has a socket for it but as I understand it without the relevant BIOS update to support it which I don’t think ASUS have released then there’s no point in having it.

Ultimately there’s nothing on my system that’s the end of days we’re I to lose it so I may just be done with the security concerns and try it anyway!

Might be worth posting your WhyNotWin11 results here for a sense check. I had some involvement in that project so know the requirements and workarounds pretty well.
Apologies for the crap picture quality - literally took a photo of my screen with my phone :0

Basically its saying the CPU (i7 4790K) isn't supported nor do I have TPM.

@Scania how did it go?
Sorry for the late reply,

So far so good, the installation was seamless with your ISO (thanks again!) I’m liking the U.I. (Although I have Startisback and have installed it to 11) it just feels more up to date than 10 and has a lot of subtleties which I’m liking - so far - feels relatively snappy and responsive although that’s usual for any clean OS install tbh.

I’m noticing clicking on a folder of MP3’s for example takes a while to open for some reason, I’m yet to try any games or indeed see if my SLI 1080ti’s are still available as such.

But, for general usage so far, I have to say I quite like 11, time of course will tell! :)

I'm thinking if i should upgrade to Windows 11 obviously i can't through windows as the CPU isn't supported (i5-6600) That's the only thing that stopping me. If i do upgrade will I still get all security updates etc.. Has anyone upgraded that has the i5-6600?
I'm 4 months into using 11 on my 4790K (as per the earlier posts in the thread) I've had no problems and am getting regular updates with no issues.

I've updated my i5-6600 media system again with no problems.

Looks like an issue with Google Chrome. Just tried using Edge and it's downloading from the Microsoft website.
I had this same problem, again I was using chrome at the time.

Worked fine for me on Firefox.

Tbh, I've had numerous problems downloading various files with Chrome, I've gone back to Firefox and haven't had any issues since.

I think my computer is having an off day I started the windows 11 install it seemed to be going OK I picked clean install then the message saying making sure you're ready to install. Checking for update. Then a message came up saying what needs your attention: Windows will remove some optional features you may need to add them in settings after the install is complete. I pressed ok next message said ready to install I clicked install then a message saying Windows 11 install failed.
Are you trying to update from Windows 10?

If so, I'd suggest you set your BIOS to boot from the USB flash drive (or DVD if you're old school!) and install it clean that way.
