Getting to that time of upgrading

Hi Folks!

Getting to that time where I need to think about upgrades:

My current specs are:

i9-9900k CPU 3.60 Ghz
MPG Z390 Gaming Pro Carbon (MOBO)
32GB Ram
Corsair 750 Watt PSU

I don't have a budget per se yet as I am collating requirements still but looking in the range of £2,500 for suggestions on potential upgrades.

I want to upgrade to a 4090, but unsure if it is worth waiting for the 5000 series as there is talk about them being far more efficient and better. I also want to swap out my CPU for an AMD model and understand I will need to find an AMD compatible board too - happy to take recommendations on those but will I need to substitute for anything else AMD compatible?

Unsure if I need a new PSU too.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hi.

£1500 for a 4090 which leaves you a £1000 for the rest of the build which is fine .

7800x3d is the way to go if you want to upgrade now but if you wait for the 5000 series GPU you may best to wait for the 9800x3d and keep saving.

New PSU definitely

Choices choice .

Build below you can get a 4090 for £1500 and could swap for slightly cheaper components to get closer to budget.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,716.88 (includes delivery: £0.00)

We're pretty late in the cycle at this point, so it is not an ideal time to dump £1K5 on one, no.

From what I'm aware, RDNA 4 is going to be midrange only, so it'll likely be better value for the performance on offer, but it won't reach a 4090.

I don't know when the 5000 cards are due, but my understanding is that they will start with the high-end.

You can run a 4090 on a 750 watt PSU, but normally we'd spec a decent 1000 for a new PC.

No, everything else will work, apart from the memory obviously ('cos DDR4 won't fit).

Hi, sorry for the absence! Just life getting in the way.

I've had to sink some money into house repairs + care for my mother. Looking at a cheap upgrade if possible if £2000 max as a budget baring in mind above specs.

Is it as simple as just picking up a 4090 or are there upgrades for CPU + RAM I can loop in?

I can't see what graphics card you're upgrading from, so it is difficult say what benefit you'd see.

Generally (in regards to CPU bottlenecks with a 4090): it depends on the game and the resolution/settings.

E.g. At 4K you'd minimise the bottleneck, but it is true that some games can still have a bottleneck at this resolution and you may find them choppier than expected.

I suspect you would be better off with gaming performance overall getting a 4080 Super or 7900 XTX and a 7800X3D/9800X3D, rather than a 4090 with your current CPU, but if you're really hammering it with enabling ray tracing or path tracing and using the max settings available at a high resolution, the 4090 would still offer you a benefit over the 4080 Super or 7900 XTX.

No, you would have to replace the motherboard. The only CPU that is better than yours is a 9900KS and their used price is ridiculous.

Tetras sorry, that's my fault. It's been an up and down day - just know I very much appreciate the advice offered a lot.

Do you have any potential suggestions on a MOBO to match a 4090?

So my current GPU is a 3090 Super and I am wanting to upgrade to 4090 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/gain...dr6x-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-20l-gw.html (I think this was my earliest find)

I presume I don't need to upgrade RAM as that may remain consistent irrespective of the model I use? (https://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-F4-3200C16D-16GTZR-Trident-PC4-25600-Channel/dp/B01MTDEYHU - my current models)

You could only choose 12th-14th gen to keep your memory (not that I'd recommend that, because I don't trust 13-14th gen CPUs).

The new Intel CPUs use DDR5 and so does AM5.

So my current GPU is a 3090 Super
I don't think there is a 3090 Super? Can you check again?

If you have a 3090 Ti, then there's not much point buying a 4080 or 7900 XTX. The 4090 is better, though £2K better? This late in the cycle? I guess that's up to you, but not for me.

It is not important, any will do.

Based on your budget and your expected current card, I'd recommend you upgrade the CPU/motherboard/RAM only to a 9800X3D assuming it performs well in upcoming reviews (unless Intel's 285K/265K find a lot of performance from somewhere) and then wait until a more affordably priced or higher-end upgrade presents itself.
