Hi Guys,

Ive been out of the scene for a couple of years so would like a couple of things explaining.

'When i were a lad' :D processors had the same FSB as the ram ie 333mhz or 400mhz.

Im looking at a c2d cpu at 2.4ghz with a fsb of 1066mhz, now im guessing i need a 100mhz mobo?

How come ill only need 800mhz ram then??

Whats the difference between 965P and 975X??

How is the Gigabyte GA_945PL_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard C2D compatible when the FSB is only 800mhz?

Will this work together??

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB ST3320620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM

Abit AB9 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)

Sub Total : £600.95
Shipping : £8.25
Vat : £106.61
Total : £715.81

Any tips on that??

I dont intend to clock much but how high can i go with the stock cooler?? 2.5/2.6?

Using my current case and peripherals again (Gigabyte 3d Aurora)

Also i prefer ATI graphics cards so whats the best available currently?

Like to stay below 1000 all in including vista for 80 quid so gives me about £200 for the graphics card, can stretch a little if it will be a huge improvment,

thanks for any advice.

I'll skip the question on the S3 as I don't know the answer for certain and I'd prefer not to guess. :)

The main differences between the 965 and 975 chipsets at the simplest level is that the 975 is a higher end chipset so often a bit more fully featured but it is not quite as good at reaching high FSB speeds as the 965 chipset is when really helps when overclocking the lower Conroes in the range.

The parts you have specified are all compatible but I haven't heard much about whether the Abit is a particularly good motherboard for overclocking. You ask how far the retail cooler will take you but you have selected an OEM CPU so you would need to buy an aftermarket cooler anyway, the Arctic Freezer 7 is worth a look at ~£15 extra which is about the same as you'd pay for the retail package.

The best ATI graphics card currently available would be the X1950XTX 512mb however it is effectively a generation behind the 8800series but since you won't get an 8800GTS for much less than £300 the point is academic when you have a £200 budget. Unless you have a monitor that supports high resolutions (1600x1200 or above) then more than 256mb Ram might be a bit of a pointless upgrade considering the additional cost so I'd just go for the Connect3D X1950 XT 256mb.

I hope that clears it up a little. :)
