Getting used to power

I don't think the problem would be so widely documented and accepted on forums both sides of the Atlantic if there wasn't something to it.
 
Thanks for the advice guys, I was hoping you would all say you just get used to it :)

I'm still undecided on VANOS seals as I don't have any cold start issues etc but will keep it as an option. (tbf not many cold mornings around here for some months, perhaps winter will magnify this if it is an issue)
 
There are power levels that you never ever think, man thats slow.... Sure something like a 330 you are going to get used to. But imagine 5-6 times that power, it will always give a rush no matter how many times you've driven it

Saying hamilton feels his f1 car feels slow is ridiculous ....I bet it feels fast even to him every time he nails it
 
If you spend most of the week driving something slower, then you keep feeling the rush. The SAE car always felt mental. I'm looking forward to this month's post Silverstone test, It'll probably be the last time I drive it.
 
I think you would probably get that froma mear 500bhp or so ...5 or 6 x 330bhp, so that's 1650-1980bhp ...lol ...if you were running a dragster maybe :p

When I said power I meant not only bhp but weight..... Plus I don't think ops car is 330bhp ?

I think the new BMW s1000rr can with a few tweaks push 230 bhp, and that's in around 180kg, you could never get used to that

Ive ridden in a few 500+ bhp cars and they feel fast no matter how many drives..... I'd settle for a 300bhp scoob though :-)
 
Shock, Horror - BMW specialist disagrees with internet advice.

I know who I'd trust, but of course, you could always get another opinion from another specialist.

When I told my SEAT dealer that the coolant temp sensor needed replacing due to reading about similar symptoms and fixes on the internet, he gave a massive :rolleyes: to the internet and said I needed a new instrument cluster(!)

Cue another dealer fixing the issue by replacing said CTS without me even mentioning it when it was in for a service.
 
Even after a few months I still think that my car is pretty quick (particularly when accelerating from low speeds).

I still utterly crave a kidney relocating amount of power though.
 
Same here. At first I thought my SLK was crazy fast (and on my test drive when I put my foot down everything was a blur). Have gotten used to it now and just take it as a given that I am driving normally. Passengers claim the opposite (as do the outside edge of my front tires) :p

After about 3 months of the Leon I was thinking "hmm, this doesn't feel as quick as when I got it".

So what did I do? I went and drove the Skoda for a bit. It was excruciating - slower in just about every respect.

And then, to ram the point home, I went and drove my Mum's 1.6 Golf - that felt like walking compared.

No problems since. ;) Point is, go drive something with half or less of the power; it'll help.

I chop and change from my 73bhp van to my 260bhp car.

Have to remember come Monday morning that I cannot overtake anything without a gap the size of the Atlantic to do it in.
 
to be honest my 335i feels slow, its really depends how the power is delivered. The bmw has such liner delivery it just feels slow. I never felt that my remaped TT was slow lol
 
I find 270bhp ample in a FWD car - it never really feels slow.

In a RWD car, I'd need 300bhp before it continued to feel fast.

4WD and we're talking 350bhp.

Of course, if you do straight line runs every day in any of the above, its going to begin to feel slow - I'm talking real world (well b-roads) spirited driving.
 
It was only one thing on my list, I had 5 other things including a biggie, correcting the gear lever sticking under 5th gear, which is common but apparently it's a gearbox out job to replace 2 seals and at the same time look at the flywheel (whatever that all means) quoted around £1000 just for this :(



As I say, I'm confused. On one hand he does actually work on bmw's all day so should know what he's talking about, and the other hand is the intaweb opinion :confused:



It's not the only thing I enjoy, I love everything else about my car (well except the tramlining). It's just the only thing that's in the back of my mind is all



one thing i've learnt from owning cars is there is seldom a "right" and a "wrong" answer.

And just because somebody works for a BMW garage, doesnt mean they know every single model of the range inside out mechanically.

Everybody has their own oppinions as to whether preventative maintenace is worthwhile. You could ring 10 different BMW independents and probably get different answers from all of them.

Make your own mind up. But the way i look at it - the work recommended is replacing an existing part that could fail. If the work is done properly and not bodged, the worse that could happen is that it makes no difference. Even if it does make no difference, you have at least replaced a part that couild possibly fail further down the line. But now its brand new, its unlikely to.

Given the number of others who have done the work and noticed a difference, id say its worth trying.
