Im a bit embarrassed about posting this, but I just dont have the time or the patience I used to have when moving OSes (I guess as a student, XP was a nice distraction). I just havent kept up with the Vista quirks and how 'this feature is cool' or 'damn the sound is setup differently so this doesnt work' conversations...

Anyway as you have gathered Im moving over to Vista and just wanted to see if theres anything I need to know before I make the move, while installing and when it is installed what I need for a better experience.

Ive already worked out that Ill probably have to dual-boot as it seems theres quite a few (older) games that just wont work on it. The system its going on is brand new so I dont expect any issues there, but just in case it is:

C2D E5200
Asus P5Q-Deluxe
OCZ 4Gb Reaper PC8500
Asus 8800GTS G92
WD 250Gb RE3 (RAID 0)
WD 1Tb Caviar Black
Pioneer 216BK
X360 HD-DVD
Auzentech XFi Prelude
Hauppauge WinTV PCI-FM (old but I believe MCE certified)
Terratec 2400i DTV (using own software)
Silverstone iMon Drive
Matrix Orbital MX610
Asus ScreenDuo
Logitech G15 and MX518
Wacom Tablet
MS X360 Wireless Pad
A few USB/eSATA HDDs and DVDRW

P.S. Tried TweakGuides but I just cant get the site open  Im sure it had a decent set of XP guides so hoping it might do for Vista. Any links are gratefully received and will be extensively read...

LOL I forgot about blackviper - had some great XP services tweaks...

Erm not even heard about UAC until I wikied it :p. Probably treat it like firewall software and leave it on and when it alerts it too many times Ill just 'allow all' ;)

P.S. Im not putting any firewall rubbish on there - just let my router do that (Linksys WRT54GS) and will get the free Avast for AV purposes...

Just make sure you've got all the drivers available for your stuff ;) i made the move at the weekend and didnt have drivers available for my sound card. they dont exist for Vista 64! Managed to get some for Onboard though, which is a spot of luck.

Gah thats the little things that worry me, especially the sound card with all the Vista changes...

Im probably going to dual boot XP anyway but now it will be to find out if Im losing any functions due to Vista and if thats a driver issue or just because Vista does it in another way.

This just doesnt sound like fun :p

I had a look for Vista 64 compatible sound cards to replace mine before going back to Onboard. I'm pretty sure yours is? The Asus Sonar and Azune i'm pretty sure are both Vista 64 compatible.

Edit: download all the drivers before you reformat, and burn them to a disc or put them on a flash key/portable hdd. At least you'll know what you have before hand. Plu sit will save downloading tie afterwards :) I almost always download and burn network drivers at the very least before i reformat. Been stuck like that before ;)

Yeah I usually do that - in fact I usually end up reading everything to know about the driver/hardware on the manu site just in case...

Vista just seems to be erksome and I just dont remember having any such issues when XP came around and I upgraded when the first SP1 came out. I thought XP was a massive technical change from the previous OSes compared to the XP-Vista move..

Xp was a massive technical change. Vista is a 98se to ME like change. I think the reason that Vista has lost so much compatability is because Microsoft have removed some core windows functions to allow space for some of the new functions. Unfortunately, this has also led to compatability problems :(
