GF just drove away from a fender bender

Its beyond me why we let people who cant speak English live in this country.

Didn't see this reply, but I'm very very slowly starting to agree. If these accidents or other things happen, it would be most handy to communicate with the other party.

I watched one of those traffic cop police shows last year. All but one of the people pulled up didn't speak English and the time spent on getting translations over the phone etc was crazy.

I am in favour of economic migration and offering asylum to those who seek it, but a condition of living in the UK surely must be learning English. Might do a few translators out of a job, but it is the best way to get the UK running efficiently.

Careful with saying that on these forums, you might get a bit of verbal hurting coming yer way :p

But aye, I agree, intensive English lessons is a MUST. Your asylum interview should be in English and if you cannot use the language on a functional level, you are to be sent back to the asylum center and have your application delayed.

Not the case.

Thats what i was told when i was involved in an accident, they asked me if anyone was injured or roads blocked etc and i said no, they said then there was no need for them to attend.

Infact everything google brings up, backs this point up.

If you were driving and damage was minor, no-one was injured, no traffic offences were committed, no animals involved and no road signs or equipment damaged, just exchange names and addresses with the other driver to comply with the Road Traffic Act 1972. Then contact your car insurance company and make a claim.

Well in my experience, it is the case. I phoned up to report having had an accident and they asked if anyone was hurt, I told them no, they then asked if we swapped details and when I said yes, he said I'd done the right thing and there was nothing else to do on it. :)

Property other than the cars involved. If you run into the back of someone at walking pace, they're not injured, you haven't hit any lamposts and the insurance companies are taking care of it then the police do not need to be informed.

I was told this by the police after attempting to report an accident in 2005 when someone ran into the back of me.

I see, I'm not an expert in this area, I've never been involved in accident.

But in a situation like this when you cannot effectively communicate with the other party then the insurance companies are NOT taking care of it..

True but I was addressing the statement made by BigglesPiP that suggested all crashes must be reported, not the specific situation the OP is in.

Sounds like you've now done everything you can since having reported it etc.

Does seem a bit wierd that the woman couldn't speak english etc but what if she was on holiday or here for 6 months or similar? What if you went to china, or more realistically were driving through europe, perhaps italy and the same happened to you and the other person only spoke italian. Should you have to learn every language in the world?
