Hi

I've just taken hold of a new system with a 4870 GFX card. On start up the GFX card cooler fan makes an intermittent noise like on for 4 seconds then slows for quarter of a second. This slowing coinicdes with 3 of 4 LED's flicking red on the back of the board.

Anyone know what this may be the manual is no use it has no error codes.

Any help much appreciated.

Edit: whoops should have given the symptom.

The machine seems to start up ok but I'm getting no output to my monitor via the DVI cable. The monitor is fine I'm using it now to typw this message. I have tried both outputs on the back of the card.

Does the system boot properly? 4870s are supposed to do a self-test on boot which does something similar to what you describe.

How long should the self test take? I'm not getting any output from the card to my monitor.

I figured after 20 seconds of not output I had a problem, not left the system any longer than 40 seconds I guess.

Ah OK, I see - it should only take a few seconds. Are both the 6-pin power connectors properly seated?

OK I have disconnected and reconnected both the 6 pin power leads at the GFX card and power supply. This has made no difference.

The LED's flash still, there are four of them if 1 is the closest and 4 the furthest from you 1, 3 and 4 flash. Now I've searched with google and checked the manual and can't find any error code listings for this card.

Here's hoping tech support can help me tomorrow :(

Thanks reflux.

From the other OcUK thread and the AMD website my LED's appear to mean

D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed

D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed

which is a little worrying.

Edit: ok apparently the spin up and slow down with 3 of 4 LED's is the normal POST behaviour for the GFX card but it should only happen once. They say it's either a PSU, connector or GFX card prob. That narrows it :D
