ok say I want an x1900 xt, I only have a monitor that deos 1280x1024 (flatscreen) is there any differnce in performance between 512mb and 256mb graphics ram. or am I thinking of this the wrong way?

Basically I read somewhere that the more ram is just better for higher res gaming.

Youre spot on.

And the X1900XT 256MB happens to be one of the 2 best value for money cards being sold at the moment, that & the X1800XT 256MB.

512MB RAM doesn't make much difference over 256MB, ever. :)

Even in 2048x1536 with 4xAA and 16xAF it's uncommon to see much of a difference.

try and play a game like GRAW at max texture detail on a 256mb card. its not possible.

512mb is the sensible option to go for if your getting a high end card these days. and the x1900xt is a card than can actually make use of the additional memory regardless if you play at low resolutions, you can use 8xAa and 16xAF and easily bring a card down to its knees at 1280x1024.
up to you but if you don;t plan on upgrading every year then go for the 512mb. if your gonna upgrade next year when dx10 is around then get the 256mb card.

I dont plan on GRAW. I would want a card to see me through spore, supreme commander, company of heroes (which I have) and the new splinter cell
